View Full Version : injured goldfish please help!

r
November 13th 04, 05:41 AM
it's 12:15 and only ten minutes before i started writing this plea for help
I noticed that one of the fry was caught head first in the intake of an
aquaclear 3000 powerhead I negligently left running. I quickly unplugged the
powerhaed and to my surprise
the little one was still alive. first things first, I separated it
by taking 5 liters of its tank water and filling a marked
speciment container and housing it in there until further info becomes
available to me. next i write to the newgroup that got me started on the
right path to healthy
happy goldfish. the fish seems reletively energetic with a couple of lost
scales, and a slight warp in its overall shape. it also seems to have an eye
injury. what now i think he will die by the time i get a response, this
bothers me. please help with any advise. it would be grately appreciated

If the fish doesnt seem bothered by that episode, ti might be ok...You could
try putting some melafix into the water to help with healing of missing
scales and scrapes and all those types of injuries...The bottle doesnt say
that you cant treat fry so I assume it would be safe o them..
what does everyone else think about this?

melafix types are medications that impact on the gills and all medications should be
used with caution but especially with fry. a bit of salt and clean water and the
fish will come around or it wont.
melafix types are a current version of a very old medication that was used in the
past or I should say people didnt use it much since there were other things that were
less toxic and worked better. one problem with melafix type meds is they can cause
the outer epithelium tissue to heal over even when there is a bacterial infection
going on in the tissue underneath. this is not a good outcome.
http://www.mu.edu/~buxtoni/puregold/care/care3.htm#TEA%20TREE%20OIL,%20Melaleuca
all medications have side effects so the balance is benefit to cost ratio. fresh
water and a bit of salt is all benefit, no cost. from there on everything got cost
in terms of harm to some part of the fish. For example: malachite green and its
breakdown compound(s) are mutagenic.
so treat with the least caustic medication and treat specifically instead of using a
shotgun approach of just tossing everything into the water. many of the meds have
bad drug interactions.

thanks ingrid, starfish,
i must admit that melafix was a favorite of mine. the again so was amquel,
stresszyme and countless other products
that claimed to benefit either the fry's or the general water condittions
and ended up cuasing negative creeps.
fresh watr and salt? not as glamorous as all those other chemicals its
produced just as positive results as when ive
routinely applied market water condtioners. one thing im afraid to stop
using is dechlore. it's new york water im dealing with and hudsun river
water for that matter.
its supposed to be cleaner these days but but i happen to know that our
plumbing system is a ticking time bomb due to its age and poor maintanance.
i used to give my dog and cats tap water and i could see rust settle on the
bottom of the bowls specially during the summer. ok going off suBJECT...rob
come back to subject please..ok sorry.>>>>>> the fry once pulled out of
intake of powehead was very much alive but unsteady and a bit warped in
shape. I
took it out of the tank and put it into 5 liters of it own tank water. for
fear of sujecting it drastic temp/changes i put it back in it 55galon
habitat and am keeping it in mesh breeder cage near the surface. its
nolonger swing like its drunk and it ater for the first itme since( one
pellet of progold predipped in tank water for minimum of 5 minutes. its
definitely pooping howerver valuable that data may be. loke ingrid said it
may or may not make it. ilost some fish sometime ago to itch.
notibly the deaths occured after disease was treated and apparently gone.
thanks again for the speedy replies.

alright,
lets say that time and space, the perceived reality, however infinite in
size; is grid on which every thing living or non living animate or inanimate
occupy a variable set of coordinates on. and my fry being on a portion of
that grid that was subjected to a force that warped it hence distorting the
shape of the fry respectively.
how in gods grid does that help me. LOL just kidding very interesting stuff
I enjoyed the very little ive read will read more on growth and form thanks
for putting me on to it.

oh.. you must use dechlor for city water. unless you have some kinda system like RO
and then gotta put minerals back in. some people hook up a charcoal filter system
inline to get rid of other "things" seem to make their fish go down. not everyone's
water is equal. even before adding salt gotta check the water for salt content.
some people on west coast got 0.05% salt in their water already. same goes for
softened water in very alkaline areas.
whenever there is rust take a sniff for hydrogen sulfide, smells like rotten eggs.
out well water was like that, had to put in a bit of PP to correct the H2S before
using it for GF.
