View Full Version : Aquarium Question

I recently bought a one gallon aquarium at a yard sale.
Everything seems to be working well. But I'm wondering
about the big plastic tube that's inside the aquarium.
The aquarium is hexagonal, and has two plastic pieces
that attach together and go inside. One is a "bottom"
piece -- it looks a little like a sightly raised platform
with hole in it and it rests on the bottom of the tank.
The second piece is the big plastic tube that attaches
to the bottom piece.
Is the air pump filter supposed to go into this tube?
That's the only purpose I can seem to find for the tube,
but it really doesn't make sense to me since most of the
air then goes up and out the tube rather than into the
water. When the tank is full the top of the tube is about
one inch below the water level, so some air goes into the
water, but not much.
Please help this beginner figure out my fishtank! Thanks.
Photo of the tank can be seen at:

It's an undergravel filter. An airstone goes into the large tube, the
air rising entrains water. Water is then drawn down through the
gravel and under the plate to replace that which rose due to the air
rising.

One gallon? After installing the tube where will the fish live?
What fish (singular) will you put into the "tank"? Perhaps a Beta
tank.

Sea monkeys. Or brine shrip. Or artemia. Whichever you prefer.
