I was thinking about things I still need to get for my set up. I'm looking
around and reading different papers on marine tanks and I realize that I
have read probably a dozen times the importance of a quarantine tank.

How important do you guys think this is? How often do you use your
quarantine tank? What do you do if you don't have one?

Extremely important. Don't start the hobby without one.

What do you do with it when you don't have any fish in it? Would have live
rock and clean up crew and it just sits there and matures?

If you're not using it take it down.
Quarantine tanks do not usually contain rock, substrate, or a clean up crew
(you cannot medicate with any of these in place), so it is easy to set up
and take down. Just keep a sponge filter going in your sump to have a
biological filter ready when you need it.

To spend thousands setting up a reef tank and choke on the $50 needed for a
quarantine tanks doesn't make much sense to me. I have two q-tanks and use
them for every new fish I get.
It is a time for close observation, acclimating them to your schedule and
food choices, and gives them a chance to build up their health before being
put into a strange system with possibly nippy tankmates. You get to know
them and they get to know you. By the time my fish go into the display they
are eating out of my fingers, and have a much better chance of fitting in.

Plus- there will be no need to try and catch them when the odd case of ich
shows up.

Here's a good website:
