The tank in our central hall close to the bedroom, and the canister filter
is slightly louder than I care for.
I can live with it, and won't bother turning it off - just wanted to know if
I could :)

If it gets any louder I will consider moving the whole aquarium to my
livingroom! :)

I've never come across a cannister making an intrusively loud noise
(but to be honest, I rarely use anyfilter or plumbing not made by
Eheim, and I think they're probably more solid and less noisy tthan
most).

If it's the cannister itself, how about putting teh cannister in an
enclosure (maybe just a box) to deaden teh sound - it doesn't need any
ventilation at teh canister, and teh heat from tehmotor is carreid
away by the water through teh pump chamber. You could safely pack teh
whole thing in foam rubber inside a box of some sort, which would
help.

If it's teh return (spray bar) put teh bar just below the surface, so
it disturbs teh water surface but doesn't actually make jets splashing
onto teh surface. Most of teh gas exchange happens by stirring up teh
surface, not by the jets of water falling through teh air.

Either (or both) these things would be better than shutting off teh
filter overnight.
