View Full Version : Dying Plecos

Hi all,

I have Waterhome5 5 gallon tank, which has been home to 3 Golden Dannios and
3 Red Eyed Tetras for the last 4 months.
Everything was going well, apart from the occurrence of algae on the tank
wall and floor.
I was doing 40% water changes and a bit of hoovering when it got bad. It
didn't seem to affect the fish, but was unsightly.
A friend suggest that I get one or two algae eating fish to help with the
house work. I got 2 Hong Kong Plecos and put them in the tank. Initially
they seemed to be thriving, eating algae, and moving around freely. (I had
cleaned the tank prior to putting them in but there was still some algae in
some hard to reach places). However less than 24 hours later, one of the
Plecos started to appear a bit lethargic, and in the morning it was dead. I
checked the other one which seemed fine, still doing a grand job of cleaning
up. Later that day it too started to appear lethargic and sort of "huddled"
looking. It died before I could take any action.
I noticed it had a whiteish patch near it's tail when I examined it, that
hadn't been there before.
The other fish seem unaffected and are still very active and feeding well.
What could have killed the Plecos? Could it have been the algae itself,
could they have been attacked by the other fish (although I saw no evidence
of injury) or was I just unlucky?
Any answers hints or tips gratefully received.

regards,

Col

Don't spell out pl#co on usenet... ;-)

It "causes" the poor buggers to snuff it.
