To answer your question, yes, but not anymore. There was a MH light that had a
special ballast that would do that. Off hand I think it was called a solar MH
light, something like that. I think it was manufactured by Champion Lighing.
The MH bulb was actualy designed for running on DC. The ballast had settings on
it that would allow you to controle how long it took to turn on and to turn
off.

Personaly if I wanted to do such, I would just use some lower watt bulbs and
put them on timers. Besides, you can't dim MH bulbs lower than 50% or you will
greatly reduce the life of the bulb, as the article points out, and also your
color psectrum would change.
