View Full Version : Angel fri

My Angels spawned the other day and we now have a bunch of little
wigglers still attached to the sword leaf. I am amazed that they have
made it this far. Everything I have read said that Angels, especially
first timers, take several attempts to get it right, if ever. I am not
a breeder and never expected these two gold angels I bought at dime size
would turn out to be a breeding pair. There is nothing special about
the parents and one of them is down right ugly but that does not seem to
matter to them. I have left the light on for them and they are very
diligent chasing away all but the cory's in the community tank. I plan
on leaving them in there and allowing nature to work it out. Any which
make it to dime sized will be given to my favorite LFS.
Since the eggs hatched yesterday I will go out tonight to find some
sponge attachments to go over the intake for my filters and some baby
food. Any suggestions would be welcome.

from my experience, you have been lucky. My pairs have always eaten the
first few batches of egg before they could hatch.
what kind of fish do you have in the tank? I think you will just be
hatching fish food if you leave them in there after they start swimming
around. Even their parents may just confuse them for food and eat them.
But anyway, congrats and have fun. It certainly is fun raising baby
angels.
also, what is the tank temp? raise it to 80-82°f so the babies do better.
For food, use some flake powdered till it is very fine. hardboiled egg yolk
dried out a bit and powdered has done well also. You can also buy a liquid
fry food at the local fish store which is what I would recommend at the
begging. But if you leave them in a big tank with other fish it will be
very challenging getting enough food to them. When they are babies, they
will need to eat a very small amount of food several times a day, the more
times the better.
btw, watch your filter. If you didn't get the foam fast enough, some may
have gotten in there. I have taken magnums off of tanks and found some nice
babies swimming around in the canisters on occasion.

attractiveness to a fish is akin to closing time at the bar, sometimes it
simply does not matter!!. Depending on what else you have in this tank it is
unlikely that the fry will survive. Once they become free swimming and can
no longer fall under the protection of the parents they will get picked off
one by one. Why would you "give" them to your LFS. Did they give them to you
in the first place?. Most reputable stores will give you a credit toward
other purchases. Where I am we have a great place (Petland Superstore) where
we get 50% of what ever the retail price that they sell the fish for. I
currently have about $800.00 in credits which sure come in handy when you
need supplies.

There is a pair of Festivums, keyhole cichlids, clown/orange fin
loaches, a bushy nose pleco, cory's and the two angels.

Well I said I am not a breeder so if they are eaten by the others it is
not much of a loss. But I do keep a 10g cycled for a hospital tank if
need be. I will only remove them if they are attacked so viciously that
my youngest gets upset.

The tank is kept at 82 - 83 all the time. I went out and got the
pre-filters and some food for filter feeders which was recommended as
baby food. It has all the same kind of stuff as green water so the
babies can graze all day till they get big enough to eat what mom and
dad eat, if they make it that long.

I will give them away because I am not interested in selling them.
Besides my LFS has been very good to me and I just look at it like
getting even. Any way, I don't expect many to make it to dime size with
the other piggies in the tank.

All the fri are free swimming now and Mr. and Mrs. Angelfish are being
very diligent protectors. The very few that snuck past mom or dad made
a small snack tho. I would like to know how long it will take the
babies to grow large enough to not be able to fit in anyone else's
mouth? And how long will mom and dad watch out for them? One last
question, how old do the fri have to be before they look like an
angelfish?

It's been years since I raised angelfish, but it seems that it was about a
month or so before they started getting the angelfish shape. As far as how
long mom and dad will protect them, I don't know. I always ended up
removing the babies and raising them by themselves.
please keep us updated.
and if you have a digital camera, take some pics and post them in

that it is, and they had plenty of food swimming around the perimeter of the
magnums. They grew better than the fish in the tank ;o)

Well the other fish picked off the fri one by one and we now have none.
I figured this would happen, just not as quickly. If it were not for
the fact that we are moving soon, I would have put the fri in a 10g tank
I have. But since I will need it to move the fish the 1/2 hour drive, I
just let nature work it out. I plan on picking up a new tank (125g) once
we move for my SA fish so the 55g may become the angels breeding tank or
I may get them a 29/30g tank for my office. It is a little sad tho.
The little ones were so cute but now I know mom & dad will try it again.
