View Full Version : possibly serious tank issue!!

I have a 55 gallon tank that I bought from pl discounts
for 89bucks --I couldn't resist the bargain.
the top rim of the tank is divided by a plastic plank
that bridges the top back to the top front.

that plank recently snapped off and separated from the
top/back. at first I thought that the plank was shrinking because of the
lights heat an/or the salt accumulation, but
im sure now that its giving way to pressure from being filled with water.

top/left(front-back)=12 3/4"
top/right(front-back)=12 3/4"
center (front-back)=13"
obviously a bowing effect occurring on the center top.
it did not occur to me to ever measure this before it all happened so I
don't know
if its a big deal or what. I know that this is not a goldfish
topic but the 55 gallon houses four very fine looking ryukins so please
help.
greatly appreciate any response

For a standard 55 gal, this isnt anything worth worrying about. In the SW
reef keeping hobby, a lot of people have cut off the center for this size
tank so it doesnt block any light.

On my 55, I caught it before it completely broke. I used plastic model
glue to repair it and a pipe clamp, across the top of the tank, to hold
it together until the glue set.

I have a 55 that it came off all together, I glued a piece cut from
plexi glass. Used a clamp and so far for a few years it has been fine.
It is an older tank and the glass is way thicker than my new 55.

More like everyone knows Donald ;~)

Without the crossbrace, the tank's front & rear panes will bow outwards
from the centre. It will be disconcerting and your canopy might not fit
as well, but as long as the tank is on a proper flat stand, I think
you'll be fine. I've never heard of a tank failure because of this, but
check the silicone seal on the sides. Without the crossbrace, extra
force gets transferred to the vertical corner edges. If you see any
signs of fatigue (gaps, air bubbles in the seal), put a pipe wrench on
the tank side (near the top) and order a new plastic top (with
crossbrace), or silicone in a piece of glass as a crossbrace.

Without the crossbrace, be a bit more careful whenever you move the tank
(empty of course). The 55g comes in various sizes, but the popular tall
narrow thin-glass with crossbrace type are more easily damaged by 'twist'
during transport without the crossbrace for support. Slide a larger
sheet of plywood underneath to carry the tank (like in a cradle).
Generally, economy tanks built with a crossbrace use a slightly thinner
glass for their construction, so a little extra caution is then
warranted. hth
