View Full Version : good protien skimmer for 60gal?
Earthlink. News

HI, i need a good protien skimmer for 60 gal reef. hair algae is starting
to come back, and mom just added fish to the tank. it previously only had a
scooter blenny and some crabs and snails, now the fish that are in there
need food to be added to tank, im worried that the hair algae will breakout
before i get a good skimmer into the tank. she doesnt really want to spend
a hundred, but will if necessary. anymore than a hundred is out of the q's.
anything less than a hundred will be good, as long as it will do the job.
one mroe criteria, she lives 2 hrs form me, i would like for her to order it
mailorder and be able to install it herself, so an easy to install would be
good!
any ideas would be appreciated.
thanks,
wolfdogg
p.s. i think the fish she added were a tomato, oscillis? clown, is that a
false? and royal? tang. is the tang a reef killer? a hair algae killer?
hope the latter is true only.

Let her pay $100
and you will add the $200 as a Christmas/Hanukkah/AnyOtherOccasion gift ;-)

Man... with this kind of information this tank will not fare for a long...
From the words you throw one can make up names of several fish:
- occelaris clown or false percula clown (scientific name Amphiprion ocellaris)
- tomato clown (similar fish to above, plankton-eater)
- royal tang (blue/black/yellow - very large omnivorous, algae & plankton-eater)
- royal gramma (yellow/purple small and territorial carnivore, plankton-eater)
Do some reading, man! I highly recommend:

sorry for the spelling errors, i did some reading on the ocellaris
yesterday, and also noticed the gamma is a gramma, haha. i knew this at one
time, but info comes and goes.
are you suggesting that a good skimmer is 300? i was some and noticed
atleast $200 will have to be spent. Would that explain why the algaes have
thrived in the tank?
the sites you submitted i have been reading off and on for years.
as far as the tankg, it wasnt blue, black, or yellow, so im not sure, is
there a royal tang?
what happened, is i am moving, so cante keep the tank at the place im
staying at now, so i set it up at her house, and im too far to maintain it
too often, so i am out of touch with the tank. i did a wter change two
months ago, the tank looked good, she got some fish then, a lawnmower
blenny, a cleaner shrimp, a conch snail which died, and about 15 red-legged
hermits, and all of these were recommended by me to help keep some of the
algae that is coming back that perfers to live in the tank rather than the
fuge apparently.
Ok, so the latest bomb she dropped on me was this, i was talking with her on
the phone and she told me she got some fish, i turned BLUE, i asked her what
she got, one was a previously recommended goby, but she also got 1 tomato, 2
oscellaris, a tang, and another lawnmower blenny and another conch. I
thought... "Great, this bites" with a failing protien skimmer, the algae
will surely come back now. The reason she got some fish is because she
doesnt enjoy a reef tank without any fish.
Now im on a quest to save the system before it overgrows in algae.
After taking a look at good skimmers i found that there is not much room for
a hang on, and all the rest need to be plumbed it appears. i would like to
get an Aqua C, and it looks like i will need to take a drive to install it,
thats ok.
anyway, back to the question, what is the least expensive skimmer that work
efficiently on this 60 gal system? I am flat broke at the moment or i would
have moved by now, and she doesnt want to spend 200.
total life count,
1 red mushroom
2 lawnmowers
1 mandarin

look for a used high efficiency skimmer on ebay. you'd be better off that
way than buying a new, lower efficiency one. based on recommendations from
this group and others, i got an aquac remora pro with a mag-3 pump for under
$75 and it works great. i was lucky to find that price, but you will
definitely save money over new equipment.

As BSackamano stated, goto ebay. You may find a bargain price but effecient
skimmer....
Check out any Deltic / Euro-Reef type if available possible .
Beside a good effecient skimmer, I am not sure what other way to resolve
this algae problem.
It really depend how you see algae as good or bad. If your mom can do manual
work like pruning those algae and suck it out at the same time with a water
pump. Or get more herbervore (sp?) to graze / nible those algae out. Need
regular water change since your skimmer is not working.

i dont see algae as bad, just when the hair gets out of hand, she says its
getting ugly. she will pluck some with her hand, but wont do any siphoning,
thats up to me. i think i will make another visit. and, yes i will look at
ebay to see what i can find. Is this Aquarium Systems Seaclone any good
over here at Big Als?
http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=22455;category_id=3203;pcid 1=;pcid2=
if not, then i will still watch ebay in hopes of getting a remora.
any suggestions on what kind/size pump i should get with the skimmer for the
60gal?

Hey wolfdogg
First thing you need to do is tell your Ma to knock it off. I know this isn't easy but explaine to her
If she can afford to go drop cash on a bunch of fish she had better better be shure she has cash
to take proper care of them,
Your really going to have a hard time finding a good skimmer for under a $100,
Stay away from Ebay unless you really know what your prices are. I check them from time to time
and see people paying more for something than than the mail order places ask for new.
Check out http://reefcentral.com
There is a selling forum and local club forums Where you can find great deals and a wealth
of knowledge.
If your thinking about a remora you may want to think about the pro model.
To be honest I'm not that imprest by my remora I've never gotten any really dark skim out of it
But it's great if you get a sand storm setting up a new tank:)
Than again my tank peram's are always right on and I still have some hair.
Good luck

It is better pluck and siphon at the same time on that spot. Otherwise
the current or whatever will move / spread the algae to another location
and will grow again.
Regarding about SeaClone skimmer, I do not really recommend it as
other user have it and seem to work ok. For 60G tank, I would suggest a Pro
version of Remora that may do a better job.
I recommend these brand:
Euro-Reef
LifeReefer
Deltec
GeoTech

I don't think you need a $300 skimmer.
Something like this is fine:

A used one is less.

Quoted from the link above: The revolutionary AquaC protein skimmers do not use venturis,
downdraft tubes, or air pumps; they employ the patented "Spray Induction System."
Could you please explain what system is hiding behind the name of Spray Induction ?
Where is the air-intake in this skimmer ? What is so great about this system ? ;-)

I will probably get flamed for posting this, but my Prism skimmer
works just fine, despite being generally dismissed by serious reefers.
I bought one very quickly on advice from the LFS (!) when ammonia
levels in my then cycling tank were going through the roof because I
was using uncured live rock. I have since seen no need to replace it.
You need to get the flow rate right, but you get a feel for this after
a while, then it pulls out the crap pretty effectively - a good "dark
skim" as I saw someone else say. Bottom line is that ammonia and
nitrite have remained at zero for the past three months (since
cycling) with a reasonable bio-load on the system and kids sometimes
getting (unintentionally) a little enthusiasic with the feeding
