I have 1 common goldfish that I have had for 7 years, as of next week.
He was a 1" feeder when I got him and is now 5" long. He is all orange
with a sprinkling of white or clear scales. I have noticed over the
past couple of years that he has more white/clear scales then when he
was younger. It's not a remarkable number, maybe only a dozen or so.
He's healthy as a horse and his water quality is good. He gets a 25%
water change with gravel vacuuming once a week. Is it normal for
goldfish to lose pigment in their scales, possibly the fish equivalent
to "going gray"?

It is very commong for a goldfish to change colour throughout the duration
of its life...just like us changing hair colour naturally
