View Full Version : are magnet aqua. cleaners known to leave scratches ?

Hi,
after neglecting my aquarium to build up algea on the glass for some
time now (i've lost my tiny magnet cleaner) i've decided to go out and
finally buy a new, large one.
i've came home happily and went to clean the aquaium ... i've been at
the job for about a minute when i noticed a hairline scratch on the
glass, i've tried to figure out if its from the inside or outside, but
it seems from the inside as i cannot "feel" it as i pass my finger/nail
over it from the outside.
are these magnets known to leave scratches on the glass ? are there any
other means of cleaning except those and chemicals ?
thanks

I've managed to scratch my tank with a magnet cleaner, but I'd taken it down
too far and got a bit of gravel on it :-(
Otherwise, they shouldn't scratch.

I've checked to see if there was gravel on it but there wasnt... i dont
think that gravel did it as i was very careful...
thanks though

I use magnetic cleaners and have two sizes. I would first expect that
you got down into the gravel and that caused the scratch. I can't say
I know of any scratches. As you point out they are not visible when
wet.
It is hard for me to imagine that there would be anything on the
cleaner that would scratch the glass that I couldn't feel it with my
finger. I would also expect anything sharp enough to scractch glass I
would feel as I moved it across the glass.
I have a stainless bladed cleaning tool. Originally it had a handle,
but the handle broke so I just use the plastic handled blade.
Sometimes I use a wash cloth first as that cleans other films more
easily.
Small scratches are no danger. I enlarged a small outer scratch while
trying to smooth it over. I worried at the larger scratches for
months, but now don't even notice.

I've found that flourite has iron(?) particles which get caught in these
magnetic cleaners, otherwise it's most likely a bit of sand or gravel
which would have been responsible. Check the cleaner to see if it has
any sharp points on it. I use these cleaners a lot, but periodically I
get an algae which is unaffected by the magnetic cleaner. Then I use a
fresh new OLFA blade and "mow" 3" swaths down the glass. You just have
to keep the right angle on the blade.

Hi NM,
these bad boys will take hard green spot algae off. Makes lite work of my
110.

While the spot algae is *usually* the toughest, there are algaes which
are even tougher to clean. I use the biggest size from Hagen on my 66g,
which looks smaller than those on that website, but they must be tough to
drag across the glass ;~) Now for my 120g, they look more interesting
(but pricey).

I do get a slight workout once a week but overall I consider it the best
aquaria investment I've made.

The tank I'm now using (55g) is one we used many years ago. Back then we
used a magnet scraper to clean the algae. I now see many, many scratches
all over the glass. It isn't bad enough to be a real problem, but they
aren't good, either. I don't care what anybody says, I think any magnet
cleaner that has a blade can scratch the glass if/when something goes wrong
(pebble caught in scraper, etc). I suppose you could say the same thing
about a green scrub pad but I still shy away from the magnets.

What is your method for cleaning the glass?

My take is that the magnetic scrapers themselves do not scratch the
glass. However, they very easily get tiny pieces of sediment or gravel
embedded in them, and that will scratch the glass when you use the
magnetic scraper.
I've just gotten rid of my magnetic scraper for this reason - I've got
tiny scratches all over my glass. I now use a utility razor blade, hand
held, to scrape the glass clean. The razor works better anyway.

Actually I haven't had to since I started the tank some months ago. I had
an oto that cleaned up everything fine. Other than that, I'd try my hand
first, then a sponge, then probably a green scrub pad if needed. I dunno,
but it just seems like too much can go wrong with a sharp blade up against
the glass. I just thought of another possibility. Somebody drops the blade
end on the floor and bends the corner of the blade just a teeny bit. Now
you've got a problem at the corner of the blade that you might not notice
until it is too late.

If you get a piece of gravel or something in these it is a good
possibility that it will scratch your aquarium

When I change water I can see a few scratches, but when the water
covers them they are not visible. I have one deeper scratch on the
outside. When I first saw it I worried about it spreading. It has
been there for two years and is the same as always.

Probably old minute scratches then, Just be careful for hard debris
when claning and you should be fine
