I have a single 400W mh (20k) over my 55 gallon. I have a 65 PC and 15K NO
(actinic) that I could
add aswell. Do I need more variety of light over the tank or is the MH fine
by itself?

I have mostly soft corals, one purple anemone. Fish and clean up crew of
course.

One of the reasons I am asking is that I am getting an outbreak of red
algae, doesn't look like cyno but
it is clumping in the sand an covering some rock. I increased the flow and
did a partial water change
but I thought maybe the light was to blame since I am skimming and the tank
otherwise seems healthy.

Thanks,
Kelly

How old is the MH bulb? If it is at the end of its life the light
specturm may be chaning which could be causing your outbreak.

For the corals you are keeping the MH should be fine, adding actincs
would be up to you.
