View Full Version : New Aquarium Set up: Stuck! :-(

Hi all,
I'm setting up an aquarium for my two goldfish outside that I have had
since early this year. I bought a plexiglass aquarium from wal-mart,
and here's step 7: Using side cutting pliers or a heated knife cut out
the rectangular hole in the back center of the hood.
The store reps at both Home Depot and Lowes both don't seem to know
what "side cutting pliers" are, so I just got cutting pliers. They
did not do the job, unless I was using them wrong. Too large it
seems. A search online seemed to indicate that they didn't look that
much different from the real pliers and in fact one rep said that side
cutting pliers and the cutting pliers are the same thing.
So the only other option I thought of was to use a hobby knife. This
got one of the joints away, but the blade got seperated from the
handle.
Any ideas?
Daniel

A pair of dikes should do it. The curved wire cutter for those who don't
know the term dikes...

Another option is what we call a fret saw...used by wood workers...
Or use a handle hacksaw...all it is ...is a handle which holds a hacksaw
blade.
Drill a hole first to let the blade get into position to start cutting.
Another option if the plastic is thin enough it is tin snips...sheet metal
cutters / scissors.

Hi,
Thanks for all the advice. A solid box cutter did the trick. If
anyone gets an AquaBrite V aquarium tank, be forewarned that you'll
need a box cutter to cut out the panel it asks to be cut out!
Hope plexiglass doesn't have a tendancy to leak.
