I want to build a corral for my tank, so I can keep a few floating plants
safe from the nibblers. I was considering removing one of the glass covers
(24*18) and replacing it with a Plexiglas box (24*18*6) deep drilled with
multiple holes. I would put one of the filter returns inside the box and
fill it with Water Hyacinths.

Does something like this already exist? Any simpler ideas?

been kicking this idea around for a while, nobody has built one and offered them for
sale. the problem is thus. the box needs to be 1/2 of tank back to front so there
is still access to clean the front glass AND, need to have a built in light box
holder of some kind so the plants get light. forget the floating plants which may
not do well, fill it with water cress, water celery which doesnt mind lower light
conditions. Ingrid

Interesting. I still plan to go side to side, rather than back to front. But
I will leave a space at the front for cleaning and vacuuming. I shouldn't
need a light box, since the tank already has 4 T8 fixtures.

The box will consist of a U shaped piece of acrylic with holes drilled in
the bottom and two sides (back & front) glued to the U. The U will have
wings that sit on the sides of canopy frame of the tank. I will make the
back wall lower, than the front to allow for filter water to enter.

I just need to find some cheap acrylic to build a prototype. The HD prices
could add up if I break any making the bends.

Idea,,, If you put a filter on the inlet of a AquaClear would that do it, in
a small
scale?
Or,
Diamond drill a hole in a spare tank on the side near the top and locate the
tank hole
above the main tank. And pump water to the spare tank and let the water
drain back
when the waterlevel get to the drain hole fitted with a return hose to the
main tank.

Same concept as a sand filter, that way you can light it up for more hours
for the veggie filter and not have to light up your main tank, as you may
not
want too many hours of light that may promote algae in the main tank.
Also you will find that you don't have to disturb the main tank when
cleaning
the spare tank.

I have done this in a fresh water system with the sand filter that doubled
as a rooting system for my house plants and it looked great but I found
that cleaning the sand was a pain.

Good luck

actually, I was thinking more of a clear acrylic hang in the tank box and use a
small maxi pump to pump water into and over the roots of the plants in the box. the
idea is the plant can grow up and out of the tank but the GF cannot eat the roots off
the plant. Ingrid
