I have been having a problem consistantly with green water born algae for
some time now. Having tried a number of products without sucess.(and doing
drastic water changes)
I had one retailer suggest not to use "Algae fix", however as a last ditch
effort. I used it.
http://www.pet-dog-cat-supply-store.com/shop/index.php?page=shop-flypage-6117
Its fantastic....followed the instructions and it almost instantly cleared
the aquarium....in a mater of hours it was almost clear and in a day or two
it was absolutely crystal clear.
My only concern was if there was any negative effects from the product ie
effect the health of the fish...which it hasnt so far.
Could it be detrimental to my fish in the long run ? As I expect its some
form or herbacide.
Interestingly enough....there is still algae growing on the aquarium glass.

there is a reason why you have algae. you have not treated the cause. what are your
nitrates? got gravel?
a bare bottom tank with adequate filtration and a well seasoned filter with warm
water will not have green water. Ingrid

Thats what I also told myself....
Nitrates are low...
I clean the gravel every 1 to 2 weeks, replacing 10 to 20% of the water
every two weeks.
In desperation I took out 60 to 70% to reduce the water born algae....with
no sucess.

Well seasoned filter....good point.. The tank is now about months old
.....Its a German 180 litre Jewal brand with its own internal filter system
.....which is supposed to be one of the best. (or was that just sales talk ?)
I heard the europeans like to have their tanks heavily planted.
http://www.juwel-aquarium.de/pdf/101920_GB.pdf page 4, info on filter
system.

I have also increased my number of plants....could this help ?
ph 7.2
nitrite ...always less than 2
nitrates.....approx 1
temp constantly 21/22 deg C room temp in our shop.

I also understand that sunlight could be a cause...the aquarium is approx 8
feet from the shop front window (facing west)...located on a side wall. The
front of the shop has a veranda over the top stopping any direct light. As a
precaution I have a roller blind which I draw down in the afternoons to
decrease the amount of sunlight.

It maybe interesting to mention I have a fellow business person who also
recently purchased an aquarium who has been having the same problems as me.
Coincidentally its the same brand as my tank.
I have also another person in our area who has a different set up using a
enhiem filter system....never had green water born algae before (4
years)...but has had this problem for the very first time. Also having
problems removing the algae.

OK.. here is the deal. green water means wastes are exceeding the filtration.
too many fish
too little filters
too much food
too few water changes, or,
gravel that is holding rotting solid wastes which is dumping nitrates

in your case, the tank has not finished cycling. there should be NO nitrites, NO
ammonia. when nitrates come up and the algae grows on the sides of the tanks, it
will be cycled. in the meantime water must be changed every day to keep the fish
safe from the nitrites. change enough water to have the nitrites barely detectable.
too high nitrites will kill off the biobug colonies. Ingrid

Juwel filters are crap - get a cannister on there!!!
I have two juwels and the filters are rubbish (well not
rubbish but not adequate for goldies)

Thanks for the feedback....
It did cross my mind that the filter wasnt adequate.
It will be interesting to see the difference with using a cannister filter.
I saw a chinese brand...similar design to enheim...
Your thoughts on the chinese canister filters ?
I can get Enheim and Fleval here.....
How often to you need to clean out the cannister filter type ?

from what I understand just clean it out when the flow slows.
