Hi, guys
I am setting up new 75G tank. I've already got a used seaclone 100 protein
skimmer today, but it's definitely not enough for a coral setup. So, I am
thinking about using Rio 1700 UL pump(642GPH) instead of a default maxi-jet
1200 powerhead(295GPH). Do you think whether it improves the performance of
the protein skimmer alot or not?
Thanks,
SW

Yes, upgrading the pump is one way to improve the performance of
these units. There are many modifications you can do if you can't
afford a better skimmer, because, I'm sorry to say, the seaclones
just don't make the grade, and I'm speaking from experience here. Do
a search for "seaclone mods" and\or other keywords that are similar.
There are things like shortening the riser tube, adding airstones....

The Seaclone 100 is a good skimmer for a samll tank, I use one on my
small tank. I think a better pump on a Seaclone may increase getting
more DOC, but wont make much difference with the eco system. Just
make sure you are using a good airstone- I use the wooden ones they
make billions of micro bubbles
Do yourself a favor when you are ready to make a purchase and go out
and get a Backpac skimmer. ($100-$150.00) I have one on my 55 gal and
it works great. If you have a sump use the euroreef skimmer.

Seaclone skimmers do not use airstones, at least not by default. You
can add one, it's one of the common mods.
