Hi all,

My sister has bought me a fishtank for Christmas so now comes time to chose
the fish to go in it.

Can anyone suggest any useful websites which would list fish along with
their pictures, how easy they are to keep, what conditions they need etc?

TIA!

Thanks for taking time to do your homework ahead of time! It will save
both you and your fish a lot of pain.

Please note that goldfish are _not_ good beginner fish... (contrary to
popular culture...)

Happy reading and good luck!

Thanks for these Donald! No, i'm definately wanting to have happy fish and
am concerned I go about it in the right way. I'm veggie (part vegan) so the
idea of bringing fish together who dont like each other etc etc just isnt my
idea of fun.

Thanks again!

Sb,

How big is the tank, or how much does it hold? This will also determine what
type of fish you can have. Remember, keeping fish isn't as easy as most think!
You have water changes to carry out, treating water, cleaning the gravel and
doing filter maintenance. But above all the work, it is very enjoyable.

Not sure as i've not actually seen it yet. I dont think its easy at all
which is why i'm feeling kinda nervous right now. Dont want to put my lil
fishies into water and kill them etc. Trust me I dont think its a case of
buy a tank, add water, add fish, fish live happy ever after

It's not as hard as it sounds. Water changes and gravel cleaning are done
at the same time and literally take only a few minutes a week. Filter
maintenance is done every month or 2 or 3 depending on the filter, how
much you feed, etc. No big deal!

Just do a bunch of reading before getting started and then ask
questions and you'll be fine.

Welcome!

Sorry, but got to disagree, the filter clean in our tank is done every
week along with a 50 to 80% water change, this is probably due to us
having 8 fancies in a 25 gallon tank. I can now imagine the "OMG 3
gallons per fish!!!" comments that are going to appear, but we have
only ever lost 2 fish and they were due to finrot, despite treatment.
We must be fortunate to live in an area that the water quality is good
enough to support this level of population.

Don't be nervious, its easy not hard work. But please don't crowd 8
goldfish in a 25 :( I have 2 goldfsih in a 55 gallon tank and do a 20
percent water change a week, I rinse the filter/sponge and change the
carbon every 2 weeks, I only rince the sponge very lightly. and I'll
wipe down the front glass. Thats it. If you get a water changer like the
python it is even eaiser.

If you go with tropical fish, you can have more dependidng on the size
and even live plants and aquascaping is so much fun!

Oh... Some types really like each other...

For dinner.

One time I bought some brine shrimp to feed my work betta.

My coworker looked at me like I was a mass murderer...

"You mean you feed Sea MONKEYS to your fish!!!?!!!!"

LOL!

Fin rot is typically caused by bad water. 8 fish in a 25? You must be doing
daily
water changes!!

They aren't particularly large fish, orandas, ryukins, ranchus and a
comet and we were originally working to the one gallon per inch of
fish rule. Now it looks like we've got about 3" of fish too much but
the water parameters are fine and the fish are thriving.
Two of our fantails that got too large for the tank were transferred
to our pond so it looks like they may be getting some company.

and you have been diligent about water changes and cleaning. it can be done, but it
is not recommended for newbies with their first fish. Ingrid

One gallon per inch of fish is for Trops, it should be 3 gallons per inch of
fish with
goldies, or 10 gallons per fish (which ever is greater).

Whats your nitrate levels like?

Why? Changing water is not that hard, is it?
