View Full Version : Are we the last of a dying breed?
December 17th 04, 01:42 AM
I'll be the first one to admit that since getting back into the hobby I've spent more time on RC
than any place else.
It really is sad to see this usenet group dying since I spent many years here in the past and
had met soo many great people and their knowledge was invaluable.
I guess the world moves on:(

Just wait until reefcentral bump up the cost for the usage and you come back here ;-)
I do not have their premium service and I see more frequently that server is
busy and I should try later or buy the commercial service version...
So do let yourself to be too dependent on that service ;-)

Well, usenet is really the little known gem of the internet.
So much useful information, and IMO nicer people then
web forums attract. It's just it's not as widely known about,
nor as technologically advanced as websites have become.

But every day the signal to noise ratio gets lower on Usenet- there is a lot
of junk to wade through. Witness the "Stupid Americans" thread. At least
Reef Central is moderated and kept on topic.
I frequent RC much more often than Usenet and do not view the "support
donation" as a "commercial service version" at all.
I see it as supporting a website I find crucial, and it's a bargain at that.
Fifty cents a week is nothing- double would even be cheap considering the
wealth of information.
Having Randy Holmes-Farley as my personal consultant is priceless.

Yea it's sad to see this newsgroup dwindle like it has. And newsgroups are so
much more efficient than RC. But when people think internet, they think web. So
many people don't seem to know that there is so much more to internet than web.

But then, if you are just passing notes, how sophisticated do you need to be?

Most people don't want to learn about the internet. There is a reason that
AOL has done so well. Most new internet users now are not computer
hobbyists. People don't want to learn about the internet. The first thing
people learn to use is a web browser and if they can do what they want
through that, they won't go to the trouble of learning anything else.

Another analogy would be the use of an automobile. How many people
actually know about their car other than to put gas in it and to take
it to the service center when a dashboard light comes on? It's not a
bad thing that a segment of users don't know about the internals of
their car (or how to use anything outside of the web browser). It's
just a part of technology becoming more user friendly.
I don't think newgroups will die off entirely, especially as more
web-based newsgroup interfaces are created. Google has done a great
job with their interface for newsgroups. ...in fact, tinkering with
Google Groups is how I became interested in newsgroups a few months
ago. :-)

Yep an in the same sence, it's sad how many people want to set up a tank, but
not spend much effort into learning. It amazes me how much people embrase
ignorance. People will set up a tank, and wonder why their fish are dying, but
don't want to learn what it's all about. And so many web pages these days are
written by people that don't know how to creat a good web page, and never
learned what the original purpose was for html. You know they don't know
whenever you see the words "Best when view ....." But it's sad. Newsgroups are
the most efficient way to go.

It really depend on individual look at "efficient". GUI base like RC to some
is very efficient way of getting information without extra effort and seeing
limit junk like spamming or trolling. You and I need to admit GUI base is
getting popular. I do not think RC will have this topic "Stupid
American...." in any forum / thread [Wait of time eventhough you skip over
it].

Ooops... BTW, you can also edit after you send in your reply, too.
Adding addition reason why GUI base is getting better.... You will get

In the days of broadband and multimedia etc, Usenet may have run its course.
At least for text based groups. After all, there is something to be said for
the ability to have a picture or MPG video attached to your reef specific
question, whereas here you need to provide a link.
I have been on Usenet since maybe 93 or 94 in some fashion then with a 486
25 IBM PC with a 14K modem, and I can see the benefits and downside, and the
world wide web has changed a lot since then. If bandwidth is no longer an
issue with the advent of broadband, then what purpose does a text only group
serve? People are going to naturally migrate towards a system with more
benefits, ie image hosting, and big file access, as well as streaming
multimedia.
Lets be honest, what satisfies you more, reading these posts or a 20 minute
vist to Marcs Reef site?LOL.

And yet some of my pages state "This page should be view in
...." as I felt the world should change from 800 x 600 to
something larger. I only did that a few times.
Btw, my site has been updated to a new host where traffic
isn't an issue. Currently the site moves 42gigs a month,
but the new host allows 80gigs of bandwidth and 2000 megs of
file space. :)
If you click on my Personal Logs, you'll see some before and
after images if you don't see the changes. ;)
I still like the newsgroup, but my schedule is so filled
with things to do for DFWMAS, MASNA and even Reef Central
that I only visit from time to time. It is nice to still
see familiar names in the list of posts.
Here's a new shot from last night of my frogspawn.

My problem is time. I've been coming here for years, maybe 98 ot 99 I cant
remember exactly, but I also frequent half a dozen other NGs and some email
lists, online community sites, and then theres my regular surfing. So I end
up coming in every couple of weeks/months, its hard to build a rapport when
you are just passing by once a month.
I wish I had more time to devote, but 1 week a month goes to pinballs, 1
week to the reef tank, 1 week to the koi pond, 1 week to golf, 1 week to
baseball ( in season), 1 week to my Jaguars, 1 week to computer games, 1
week to..... well you get the idea, I ran outta weeks , well, weeks ago!

I have no idea if any other folders have been left out. My
site is packed with stuff, and I've spent several days going
over the error logs to correct each item that I could.
Part of the problem is that the older site still exists and
will continue to do so as the links and images are connected
to messages in the usenet and on many message boards. I
didn't want to delete the material from all those resources,
so I've been putting in redirects on the older pages of the
previous site. There is still plenty more to do.
The new site is running very well, with very few errors
occuring. I even created a couple of files to keep the
search bots happy, and to add a nifty icon that appears if
you bookmark my site.

Aol is not the only newsgroups server out there...
If aol is neglecting their dutes, why do you pay them ?
I am using free newsgroup servers and there is no reason for complain.
Get rid of aol and get a real internet service provider!

I am using several newsgroup servers and mix their
content using a software on my local machine to
make a complete newsgroup solution for myself...
It is quite complicate to duplicate exactly what
I am using - especially when several servers are
foreign language ones...
My point was: there are free newsservers out there.
Use www.google.com and find one for yourself.
If you do not find one - I can show you how to use
some foreign ones which provide English language
groups.

I have used google, but I don't like using a web based provider. I want my
newsgroups to download into my computer.
You don't use any US providers?

I use SBC Yahoo DSL and they provide me with news.chi.sbcglobal.net
newsserver... And every good ISP will have some newsserver available.
Except infamous AOL! I mix the content of many newservers because
neither one of them has all groups and all posts on the given group.
Never deal with AOL. Anything else is better than AOL.
