Hiya,
Can anyone help ID this yellow cichlid?
Supposedly the pictures show a pair - they are still young but
the male has some bluey sheen in his fins and is larger.
Probably Lake Victoria area.

Thanks all!

Thanks but it doesn't have any blue. And it's got more of that cichlid
bumpy nose, you know like Kribs have.
I looked at yellow rock kribs and decided it wasn't that either ;(

Actually they both look a lot like female yellow rock kribs.
But neither looks like a male and I was told one definitely was,
and shown a bigger version (which looked the same, but bigger,
no development of colours).

Yep - we discussed them a lot in store, what would go with a territorial
zebra obliquidens (which doesnt really bother smaller fish but would bother
them when they get bigger), what else is from Lake Victoria area, etc.
And then stupidly I forgot to write the name down, and I won't be able
to go back to the shop for a while, by which time they will prob have
gone anyway.
They were 2 for £12 and there were some smaller juveniles which
were still all yellow and a lighter colour, if that helps!

Yeah I was contemplating a couple of what I can only describe as gorgeous
"electric neon yellows" because I forgot to get the name as well, went back
and they were gone. I really want to find those again, but so far nothing
has come even close to those vibrant colors. Going hunting again today...
gotta find them LOL
Maybe drop them a line and see if they can ship to you? Good Luck! ;-)

They look a little like some cichlids I saw labelled as Pseudotropheus
crabro, Malawis. But wouldn't be willing to say that's definitely what they
are!

Definatly a Pseudothropheus crabro also known as Maylandia Crabro,
(Bumble bee or Hornet).. I have one. He's kinda shy around his tankmates
and seems to like watching whats going on outside the tank.

Thanks, someone offlist has given me that ID too, and after a bit
of a Google I agree! Cheers.
Reassuring to know yours is shy, after reading about pecking
at Catfish scales I was worrying about how mine will be a handful!
What's yours in with? Mine are the smallest fish in the tank at
the mo and happy to stand up to the others, but not aggressive
or damaging them, just that they won't be bullied out of where
they want to hide!

I think my Hornet is just shy because he's the last addition to my tank and he really hasn't found a vacant territory yet. I rescued him from an isolation tank at a small pet store. They said he was picking on the other cichlids. I guess it just took a little Attitude Ajustment for him.. :)

Ah - I always reset the tank (with new rocks and caves) when I
add a new fish... otherwise my existing cichlids do get a bit
bullish!
Cheers,
