View Full Version : 10 gal eclipse

Hi all - Went by Goodwill today and they had a 10 gal Eclipse system (tank,
hood and powerhead) for $25. Since I am still desperately hooked on fish
tending (and getting more) I almost bought it. The only reason I didn't was
when I very briefly plugged in the powerhead it seemed to turn but rattle.
Can the powerhead be replaced or an alternative be hooked up. Just to look
at it I would be concerned whether just hooking up a small pump with hose
would produce an even enough flow into the cleaning chamber. Right off hand
it is not apparent even what the gph rating should be. Sorry I cant tell
you much about the 'model' except the powerhead has an intake tube like my
penguins and it does not appear you can dissassemble it to replace the
impeller, if that is the problem. Other than that I am only familiar with
the eclipse hood filters by 'reputation'.
Anyone familiar with these small tank systems?
Thanxx

| I would guess that the powerhead would quiet down when it is water.
| I've had a few pumps that would rattle out of water but were fine
| submerged.
Totally agree. Most of my pumps\powerheads will rattle if run out of
water. Actually...can't think of any that don't.......

as others have said, any powerhead will do that when run dry.

Thanks - I have never tried to 'test' my pumps when not submerged in water.
I think I'll buy it then. Gotta be someplace I can stick that little tank.

I believe a pump can be damaged running it dry. Those small nylon
bushings aren't designed to handle the heat generated by the spinning
axle. I am very careful when changing water to not let the water get
so low the water flow through the pump stops.

You ran it dry? Of course it'll rattle.

I put the pump to my ear, plugged it in and immediately unplugged it - 1-2
seconds. This was to see if it was turning at all. I have done this a
number of times with a pond pump and they are completely silently just a
slight whirring sound. Now I know the small aquarium motors are apparently
different.
