View Full Version : clown suicide

One of a pair of percula clowns jumped out of the tank last night. I'm
trying to figure out if there was a reason for it, or if it was just an
unlikely jump. There are no other fish in there yet, besides the remaining
clown, just a chocolate chip star, a small emerald crab and a clean up
crew.

Tank size- 55 gal
ammonia- 0
nitrites- 0
pH- 8.2
nitrates- 10
salinity - 1.0235

TIA,

I had a six line wrasse commit suicide. I think it was because of feeding. I
was feeding the tank and left the lid open, then went to do some yardwork. My
guess is the guy saw some food on the surface of the water and went after it a
little too fast. I've seen him bump his head a bunch, but that was when the
lid was down. So when I got back an hour later, there he lay right in front of
the tank. I tried to put him back in and move water thru his gills with no
luck :o(

I could understand if I had left the lid open. The thing is that he barely
had any room to jump out of, this cranny about a half inch above the top of
the tank- that makes me think he really wanted out.

Wrasses are known to jump. It is what they do.

Although I am not massively experienced with clowns I have had several
specifically percs. I have never seen them jump out. Double check your water
paramters.

Must be a conspiracy, my Ocellaris which I have had for going on 5 years
decided he wanted out the other day also.

I was on vacation but my pet sitter found he had become a new cat toy. Since
the cats can't get in, I have to assume they jumped at the tank and scared
him sufficiently to get him to jump out the small vent space at the back of
the tank.

Ive lost a cleaner wrasse, royal gramma and one or two other small, fast,
fish like this over the years. My pet sitter was far more distraught than I
was, its just part of the experience unfortunately. It doesnt necessarily
mean anything is wrong with your water, the little guy was probably just
spooked by his surroundings or something, if your tank is too bare and
nowhere for him to hide, that could be a cause.

Yea I bet he didn't listen to the warnings of not letting your fish sit too
close to the TV :-)

When I set up my 29g years ago, I bought to True Perculas.
After about 2 years, one jumped out of the tank, through a
very narrow spot. Honestly, it had a 50/50 chance of
falling right back into the tank, but chose the wrong way to
wriggle. :(

It was very sad, as they were a beautiful pair. I still
have the other one, that is now 7 years old. It has mated
with a False Percula and lays eggs every 2 weeks.
