View Full Version : Disparity In Emerald Crabs.

Hi all and happy holidays.
I bought a cleaner crew a couple of months ago. Included were two
emerald crabs. What has me confused is that one emerald crabs grew to
almost three times the size of the other one. It's sort of scary to look
at him/her during feeding time, because he brings out his/her pincers
with high precision on the falling flakes. Make me wonder if he can do a
job on my cleaner shrimp and fish (yellow tang and chromies.)
Also, there are two hermit crabs that outgrew their shells so quickly,
that my turbo snails disappeared altogether. The rest are these little
crabs in their spiral long shells that remain the same size, and
continue to dwell the bottom.
Thanks in advance for any feedback and advice.

I have an emerald crab that is probably close to 3 inches if i were to
stretch his claws out. He's never bothered anything, and i have
numerous cleaner and peppermint shrimp as well as some
smaller gobies. About the only thing he's "bothered" is the bubble
algae that i got him for in the first place, and i love him for it.
He ripped through that stuff like a cop at a donut festival.
But of course all living creatures have their own attitudes.
Just keep an eye on him, and if you notice anything strange, or
notice him going after something, pull him out. Good luck
catching him though!
As for the hermits, what kind are they?
Make sure you have plenty of shells, and well expect to replenish
your snail supply after a few months. Pretty common i think...

You can go out to pick some shell off the beach or seafood place.
As Jon stated / reply. Simply watchout any critter that have a pincher /
claw.

Thanks all for your reassurance. Hopefully it doesn't realize the
capacity it has to virtually eliminate most life forms in the tank. Up
to now, I consider it docile and scared of its own shadow. And you are
right, catching it will pose a logistical situation indeed : )
