View Full Version : Yellow Tang Vertical

Here's the scoop:

My yellow tang is lingering with his nose toward the gravel all day. I
have no idea why, but I would sure like to find out.

My tang had ick a while back, it is gone now after some freshwater dips and
the hyposalinity I began 2 weeks ago (SG 1.009). My aquarium is still
cycling and the ammonia is at 8, nitrites are 0. I did use Ammo-Lock2 and
I'm planning on a water change (25%).

More info, the tang has a small white patch on his belly, and what appears
to be cotton mouth. He also has a tiny red spot on his side that is slowly
healing. I've tried Kanacyn, which seemed to help a little, but didn't
totally cure all fungal problems. Furthermore, it looks like maybe he
might be bulging slightly at the sides. Can anyone give me a clue as to
why he is lingering vertically? He is still eating, but every now and then
he darts. I've also noticed some red on the edges of his fins.

Is Ammonia levels in the region of 8.0 not horrendosly high? I only say
this becuase I posted 0.35 ammonia in a different group, and was advised to
change 30% water ASAP. If we are using the same calculations, then Ammonia
of 8.0 is surely going to kill your fish?

Who knows, im not the best person to give advice, but surely a water change
ASAP wont hurt.

Gary.

Your tang is suffereing from ammonia poisoning. The tang was, IMO, a
poor choice for a cycling tank.

At this point, all you can do is do water changes until the cycle
gets going.

Ammonia at 8.0? That is IMO at toxic levels. Thsi would explain the tang's
issue. He's dying from ammonia poisoning. What may look like white patches
or colored edges may in fact be ammonia burns.

Damsels are probably your best bet for cycling a tank. I wouldn't add
anybody else until your NH3/4 NO2 and NO3 are all at 0.

Green Chromis are the best because they are not aggressive. Damsels are
nightmares and Chromis can stick around for the long haul.
