Recommended Equipment

Hello, I am starting up a 10g tank. I plan on having just black gravel
a black backing, some anacharis and some neon tetra. I was ondering if
anyone could reccomend any equipment, like a filter heater or
lighthood.

Sounds like a pretty basic setup. In all likelihood, for your needs,
one of the 'starter kits' available at places like Petco, PetSmart
and other big-box stores would be fine. A basic power filter, (I
recommend one with a bio-wheel, less chance of wiping out your
biological colony when cleaning the media) a heater, (neons will be
happiest around 78 degrees F. Anacharis grows like a weed under
powerful lighting, so the basic fluorescent bulbs will be fine.
Have you done your research about fishkeeping, and the nitrogen
cycle in particular?

I would purchase and Eclipse system from Marineland. They can be found at
Petco etc.

Thanks, I do however have a 20g and a 29g and have been in the hobby or
as I see it, the obssession of aquaria for 2 years. Thank for the
inivte to post more for help. Now I'll take you up on it... I have used
BLack Tetra to cycle one tank, Platinum and Snakeskin Gouramis to cycle
another. Would Neons be sufficient to cycle a tank, and more
importan6tly, would the be able to survive the cycle.

IME, neons are a bit on the fragile side from a cycling point of view. Do you have other tanks already running right now? Seed the new filter with media from the established one. Or do a fishless cycle and avoid killing any fish at all. I have ceased to put fish through the cycling process, it's just mean since there are other options.

Neons would imo be a bit fragile for cycling a tank conventionally, but
as you can simply transfer over aged filter media to the new tank's
filters to establish the tank, I would say that Neons will be fine to
start with. Feed small amounts periodically (avoid overfeeding) and
monitor the ammonia and then the nitrites. If you never measure any but
you do start to see nitrates, then you are basically cycled, until you
make any significant changes in the fish-load.

For a 10g, if your hood allows, perhaps a small bio-wheel filter would
fit the requirements nicely. Heating can be done in a combination of
methods, but the most typical is a fully submerged 75 to 100w heater.
Lighting should be fluorescent, the more the better as a 10g hood is
quite small. Note that Neons are typically warm water fish and Anachris
is a cool water plant. I'm sure both would be happy in the 76-78F range
though. hth
