Your mystery fish, shedd%20027.jpg is the paddlefish, Polyodon
spathula... Big fish, and very unique. You see, I am clueless when it
comes to tropicals... but I can't get enough of the native stuff!!!!

Thanks for sharing the pics, some pretty good stuff.
Maybe I should set up a site with pics I have of Underwater Adventures in
Minneapolis?

Alternately you could send me the pictures and some descriptive text and
I could put another page up on my site. Maybe we could start a series on
all the best public aquariums in the world.

Thanks Richard, I've updated the site. That's not a fish you'll see in
many aquariums. They are filter feeders.

I was just thinking whether you had come out here yet the other day.
How was the trip?
Loved the pics. The Cardinal tank's picture doesn't live up to real life.
Bummer.
The first time I saw it they were all over the place. Possibly they had
something else in the tank before that kept them on the move in a large school.
The second time I went, they were like you had seen them. Dispersed, and just
hanging out. No wall of flashy color going this way and that. Just hanging out.
You know...they (the aqauirsists there) do take phone calls. You could suggest
they put something in there to keep them in a nice school...as I saw the first
time.
Let them know that you've heard quite a few folks speaking of this tank and had
your expectations high, only to see them just lazing about.
Their number:
Shedd Aquarium......312-939-2438
Calls are taken between 1:00-1:30 pm central time zone.
I can give them a call as well. What "predators" would you suggest.

A series on public aquaria sounds great. I will sort through the pics I have
and email you about 8 - 10 of the best ones. .

Excellent, very neat city. Chicago knows how to do conventions, but the
convention centre is huge. I think it was 4 acres, and it took me 4 days
of rushing to visit all the exhibits.

I won't call them because it's unlikely that I'll have another
opportunity to head up that way again. I'm not sure what a good predator
would be. I would experiment with Pearl or Giant danios and maybe Silver
Dollars, large enough to scare the Cards into schools but hopefully not
eat too many of them ;~).

Makes me wish I had better pictures of the Chattanooga Aquarium in
Tennessee. That place was great!

Strange to see this thread here. Glad I found it in my daily visit.
I'm an exhibit designer for the company that designed exhibits for the
Shedd Aquarium. We did the Caribbean Reef tank in the Rotunda.
Here's a link to our aquarium projects page

I'm glad you had a good time. :-)

I checked your web site (it could use a lot more pictures imho). I'm not
certain which was the Caribbean Reef tank (this one?
http://www.2cah.com/netmax/Links/shedd%20020.jpg ), but all the marine
tanks were very impressive. You have an interesting job :o)

Yup, that's the one.
I think more photos may be coming to the site. It was just redesigned
and finally posted on Thursday, so it's really new. I haven't even gone
over everything yet. I'll pass your opinion onto the site designers.
(since they're sitting 15 feet away from me right now. ;-) )

I asked. They said only about 25% of the project photos have been
uploaded. That was good news. I looked too and felt the same.

I'll second that observation. I saw the tank over
the summer, and the cardies were schooling pretty
well at that point. I'm pretty sure the Shedd people
had a few discus (or maybe, just maybe some
Pterophyllum sp.) in the tank to keep the cardinals honest.
Anyhow, it's a mesmerizing tank, and almost single-
handedly responsible for my return to aquaria. :)

Maybe my tastes are lowbrow, but I saw NetMax's
pic of the dispersed cards and, well, it's still
striking. When they're schooling, though, it's
totally intense. So, I propose something equally
flashy as a tankmate. Like, oh, a blue marlin. hehe.

I'll add my pictures of the Seattle Aquarium if there is interest.

How big are the pictures? I'll post them if they are good.
