I recently brought some fish and they have developed white spot,i wish
to treat the tank but was told i will need to turn the skimmer off,i
have a reef 500 filter system,and if i turn the skimmer off the water
will not pass through the bacteria balls for the filtration,can anyone
advise of a solution on this

Remove them to your quarantine tank, would be my solution, but since
you said you recently aquired them, I'm going to assume you don't
have one. Raise the temp a couple degrees and treat with the skimmer
on, and look into better filtration systems once the outbreak passes.
