Can anyone offer me advice as to why my fishtanks water is turning a green
colour after a week or so?!?!

I would almost help you, but I am having the same problem with my tank.

I have tried most everything that I know of to get rid of mine.

I covered the tank up for three days and changed about 40% of the water each
day that it was covered up. I have some phosphate removing granuals in my
filter but those don't seem to help.

I change roughly 40% of my water twice a week, and it still comes back.

I've cut down on my feeding by half, but it still comes back.

So, even though it is caused by phosphates and nitrates, nothing seems to
take care of it. I even have several live plants but those don't seem to
help too, even though they are growing quite well.

You could post your water parameters. The most common cause of an algae
bloom is direct sunlight. I have a page on algae control on my web site.

Hi
Green water is an algae bloom which indicates that your phosphate level is
through the roof....it happened with me and months after trying to figure
out where the phosphates came from, i found out is was my gravel....so i got
rid of it!

True, I guess I didn't think about that.

But, I would say that there is just a small area on the side of my tank that
gets maybe 25-30 minutes of "direct" sunlight. I have all of the windows in
the house covered with blinds, but there are those thin lines of sunlight
that come through to a small area of the aqarium. Never thought that the
small amount would cause such growth...

diatom filter or UV sterilizer will take care of it. Without one of those
you have to do a lot more than 40% water change. I would up the water change
to 75-80% . I had it several times in my planted 77 and doing the massive
water changes was just too time consuming so I bought a Vortex XL. Cleared
it up in a couple of hours to crystal clear. The downside, well not a cheap
solution to buy one and it has sat in my closet since the first use.

I had a similar problem having left a carbon pillow in the filter too long.
I put a phosphate in scrubber in and darkened the tank for 4 days bingo.

I also get a slight algae bloom when I overhaul the filter and alot of the
bacteria gets wiped out.
Doesn't last long though, I just leave the lights off for a couple of days.

Might have been a better investment than you think. I've seen algae
blooms unaffected by massive water changes. They just return back to
their original condition.

yup , quite true and the main reason I bought it .Nothing looks worse than
pea soup in your livingroom show tank. I also bought a UV sterilizer, maybe
overkill but with the number of tanks I have going it does not hurt to have
all the bases covered.

I guess I just got lucky, and/or lazy. I decided to grow plants this
time around and started slowly improving my set up. I started with
new coralife bulbs, but they were only 15 watts. So, I bought a JBJ
36 watter and added it to one end of my 55g tank. Also, on the same
day, I planted a fert. spike under a java fern to watch it grow like a
tarzanian jungle. Bammo, green water within 5 days.

I did some more frequent water changes, added a bigger clump of java
moss, and removed the fert bomb. Within two weeks the green water had
subsided and now it's crystal clear. I've since added a second JBJ 36
watter to the same end of the tank, for a total of 72 watts over one
side of a 55g. The plants are happy, the nitrates are a constant 10
or less, and a nice crop of fuzzy algae has covered the bog log.

Next thing is to set up the C02 system that is coming in the mail. I
broke down and bought a regulator/solenoid/diffuser. I just didn't
want to get into a maintenance loop with the yeast. I'm about maxed
out now with hatching or decapping brinies, frequent water changes for
the Borellii fry:

pictures 30b, 30c, 30d, and 30e also

and soon to be dosing with nutrients, ferts and chems, oh my!

Good luck with your GW jss, Mandy and Ozdude,

steve

PS Green water? Me? says Mandy. Call me a prognosticator, but I
think it's in your future. Don't freak out, it's only temporary. And
just 'cause you can't see your fish doesn't mean they're not happy.
