Hi all and happy New Year.

I need some advice regarding my live sand. The problem is, there is no
color to it. Pieces of broken coral and shells, it looks sort of gray.
I've seen many reef setups with beautiful light colored sand with is
almost powder in consistency.

My question is how do I incorporate a sand bed with my existing live
sand? Do I just add sand to make a layer and have two beds, or do I just
mix it up with the present sand with a greater ration of the new sand?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Rich

Richard, just add a little bit of sand each week, never
putting more than 1/4" or more over your existing bed so you
don't smother your micro fauna.

I would add it as a layer on top. You don't want to bury the animals in it
too deeply.

Thanks to you and the others for your input. One more question, thus
particle size make a difference, or is it just a matter of taste.

Rich

Sugar fine sand is what most prefer. Anything finer will
work, but it tends to act like dust and blow around - at
least at first.

For some reason I was think adding live sand to an existing sand bed. I
think you will have to add it a little at a time.
