View Full Version : My Glowlights spawned!

January 4th 05, 03:37 PM
Hi folks,

I haven't found too many datapoints out there on spawning of
glowlights, so I'll put mine out there. On Dec. 30th, in my 75-gal
planted tank, two of my fourteen H. erythrozonus went at it. As I was
about to travel to CA for a couple days, I didn't make any attempt to
sequester the eggs. The fish spawned about 6:45PM, a time when only
half my tank's 260 total watts of light are on.

Anyhow, here are my tank data:

WATER:
Temp.:........82F
KH :........4
pH :........6.5
[CO2]:........37-40ppm
GH :........4
[NO3]:........10ppm
[PO4]:........1ppm
[K] :.......~10ppm
Fe :........1 capful Kent Fe 2x/week
Trace:........1 capful Flourish 2x/week
Peat :........1 capful Kent Humic per 10gals.

PLANTS:
Heavily planted with hairgrass, watersprite, elodea, ludwigia, cabomba,
Echinodorus spp., bacopa, limnophila, some other stuff.

FOOD:
Frozen bloodworms (the kind with added vitamins) fed 1-3 times/day.

Thanks for the info. I got Emperor tetras (Nematobrycon palmeri) to
spawn, though I think it was a pH crash which trigger it *oops*.

About a month after my first observed glowlight tetra spawning run, I
have now found what appears to be several generations of surviving fry.
They have apparently avoided their parents' mouths by hiding in thick
masses of plants, and have been feeding on eensy little water
organisms.

I was able to net three from the largest generation. These guys look
like real adult tetras, only about 5-7mm in size. They're now in a
5.5-gal tank with some light aeration, java moss, and BBS. Not sure if
they know the BBS (frozen) is food yet, since they strike at it but
seem not always to swallow.

Water in the fry tank is KH 2ish, GH 3-4, temp 78, NO3 ~8ppm. I just
started with the water from the 75-gal plant tank in which I found the
babies, and I'm slowly changing it out with water of the same general
hardness but without plant ferts. pH will eventually settle just above
7.

Fun times. :)
