$$ We're leveling an inground kiddy pool with a small waterfall in front of
the front porch. The darn thing keep sinking on one side showing the
liner.... AAAARGGGGHHH!!! It's enough to make me crazy! I pulled the
pool out, but with the rain and soggy ground we can't do much with it now.

Ooh good topic...

1. Dig and install new Lotus only garden. Possibly named Ode to Nedra.
2. Finish patching and cementing stream.

Spring of '05

General demucking of pond bottom. Distributing muck
to happy trees and shrubs in the backyard.

Repotting of four jj lilies I put in last year.

Try and get the six foot high grasses out of the
one of the edge bays that I planted in there as
seeds from a lake in Northern Idaho. Give up as
impossible.

Hope that more of the pacific chorus frogs I adopted
as eggs from jj return to the pond. Hope the lady bullfrog
doesn't return. Remind myself that if lady bullfrog does
show up not to make any rash announcements about catching
her. This just leads to embarrassment.

Not waiting until next year for the first item. We need to get the big pond
re-lined. Bad timing on ordering the new one. It came as the weather and
family obligations got prohibitive. After we get that done, I'll plant the
free plants that I got from my best friend's now-defunct pond (which I gave
her to begin with), and add the fish back in. Then, we have to camouflage
the trough that the gravel bog is in and make it look like the return is a
waterfall. I'll believe that one when I see it, frankly. And finally,
build the cover over the new koi pond, since that was the whole reason we
built it. Once that's done, I can pot up some pretty patio plants so our
new porch area can live up to its potential.

Plan for spring/summer 2005:

Dig/line/fill pond #2. This is to be ~6'x6', on the shady side of the
sunroom, right under the edge of it, so when you're in the sunroom it
looks like the water goes right underneath you (but the overhang is
actually only about 4"). Surrounding landscaping to include some of the
monster rocks they dug out to do the sunroom footings (levering them in
to place will require some....leverage. In a family full of engineers,
this is what we do for fun ;-). Then, general cleanup and repair of the
backyard from the construction damage. Goal: naturalized "forest floor"
kind of look.

Really like your Ode to Nedra, BV ;-)

This coming year I hope to try planting some water lilies in the Koi pond.
What can I plant the lilies in to ensure the koi wont have a wonderful
luncheon?
Got any swell ideas? I mean other than covering the planting tops with
rocks ;)

Thanks those of you who have upheld my badly sagging reputation. Love y'all
muchly.

Hi Nedra,

I saw somewhere the planting pots could be packed with heavy clay which
in turn gives the Koi minerals they need anyways.

$$ My koi don't bother the leaves much but will dig them out of the pots and
kill them. I now put bird netting all around the pot when the lily is
dormant. The top of the pots are completely covered. The leaves grow up
through the netting and koi can't root them out of their pots. However
being rough and tumble fish my koi do bruise and tear the leaves. Lilies
just don't thrive in my koi pond like they do in the GF pools.

And that a good reason NOT to use clay. I use sand and large rock over the
top. Being that you haven't had lilies in the pond for awhile I'd pot up
two lilies and get them going in a safe place so a lot of pads with thick
stocks are growing vigorously. At this point put the plants in and stand
guard for the next couple hours. Every time the fish go over and check it
out, scare them off with a skimmer net.

Just as there is safety in a school for fish, there is danger for the
plants. A new plant and a school of fish that get frisky will take down a
plant in no time. If they discover the plant over time, one by one, and get
use to it without be allowed to think "new toy". They will "usually" leave
it away. I use "usually" only as a disclaimer as this method has always
worked for me, YMMV. ~ jan

========================
I use that green plastic covered garden wire that comes on a roll to tie
tomato plants to stakes. It comes with a snip to cut it to the lengths you
want. I buy it at Wally World's garden center. I take a large piece of
leftover netting and set the plant on it, then just sort of bag it up and
use the wire to hold it closed. The closed part being offset to the plant
grows through the net. On large lily pots I cut a piece to cover the top
only and use the same wire to secure it around the edge, about 8 pieces of
the wire. This wire will last over a year underwater.

I first planted my lillies in mud with rocks on top. They went crazy. Last
year I tried just rocks and they were pathetic. This year I am going back to
the mud with rock covering. All of my plants are planted in waste baskets
that have holes in the sides, and bottom. My Koi have never disturbed them.

Hmm, I just had an idea for a VF experiment.

My Iris overgrow their pots/baskets every year, and turn into a tangle mass
of roots. I plant them only in rock. So, how about instead of using baskets,
use mesh bags, filled with rock. Sit them in the VF. They'll sit more level
then the pots, and I expect will thrive.

Off to the mesh bag store for me...

My lilies were first planted in the large sized nursery pots. With lots of
rocks on top.
The Koi were still pretty young .... they had a blast! I'd see a lily
traverseing the top
of the pond. A koi or two were hauling it all over. I got such a kick out
of watching
them play with the lilies... then it hit me that the reason the lilies were
disappearing is
because the koi were Eating Them. So I guess you could say I've always had
a
problem with lily-eating Koi. Must be an individual koi thing?

$$ Excellent idea. Give it a go! I haven't done anything with my water
iris. They've become so tangled at one end of the pond we just leave them
alone. They're on a shelf and have grown all together. You can't even see
the pots anymore. The fish like to spawn in the tangle. When we clean the
pond we just hose this iris forest and let it be. BTW, the iris we once had
in the settling tank grew 6' tall. They actually blocked the water flow and
had to be removed.

Well, I plan to finish my veggie filter, dig a new little pond (100
gallons or so) for the return from the VF, try NOT to buy any new kio
this year (LOL - yeah,), finish landscaping, and start saving for a new
liner when this one gets a hole in it and I have to redig and expand my
pond for the new liner to fit exactly proper and all. :-))))))))

My DH has informed me that he will do no projects this
year! He has his own projects and will not be available
for any of mine :-(.
I guess I'll just sit by the pond, watch the fish and listen
to the canaries singing.

Sounds like a plan to me.

Just keeping up with maintenance will be enough for me this year. Only new
thing will be trying to catch the baby koi out of the ponds. I dread that,
catching fish is always a stressful time for me, because I know it is for
my fish. ~ jan

Well Bonnie, this puts you in my class. I've never had Free male help with
the ponds.
Opps take that back. Dave, 1st son, helped me put in the veggie filter
about 4 years ago.
I thought I was in Heaven....
Anyway, welcome to the club sweetie. It really isn't that bad ... sitting
by the pond
and dreaming.

Does Nedra have to be dead to have an Ode?

I have been toying with the idea of putting in a more formal looking pond
for some time. Your page may have inspired me to do the work....

Nope...just look at her lotus to see she deserves an Ode. What a silly
word...ode.

I've always wanted one. I just don't have a lot of room left.

I wish we had put in one huge pond of 3 to 4000 gallons rather than the 2
smaller ponds of 800 and 2000 gallons.

I wish I made mine more like 5000-6000. And I wish I had put in more
shelves.

I really like not having any shelves at all. Since I redid my pond to be
without them (some years ago now) I have not had one loss from raccoons
which had been a constant problem. I also have crates upside down that the
plants sit on and with one side of them being higher than the others they
serve as caves that the fish love to hang out in. As the saying goes...
different strokes for different folks...

================================
Fortunately we have enough shelves in both ponds. We've considered ripping
both liners out (ponds are 6 foot apart) and making one large pond with a
decent waterfall. But then we've discussed moving to town since we're
getting older and there's a lot of yardwork out here. It's also
inconvenient since everything is so far away. Before putting more money
into a larger pond which we would be forced to leave behind, we're not doing
anything "pondwise" - if that makes any sense at all. :-))

Shelves/no shelves is as good an argument as rock bottoms, or roofing
vs. pond EPDM :-)

I had plenty of shelves in my last pond. The next one won't have any.
It's just much more flexible (and easier) to make the pond straight
sided and add milk crates or PVC racks to put plants on.

A bog's nice, though.

Your attorney's wine or your attorney's plants? Either way, I don't
want to be there when you sick them on someone....
