View Full Version : Fish "Materials"

I have a couple projects I would like to try, but Im not sure what
materials I should stay away from. I'll bounce a couple off of you
all....

PVC? And what kind of glue to hold it together
Copper fittings (specifically a solenoid)
I assume there is some silicone/glue for fish tanks to hold plexi
together?

Thanks!

Most kinds of PVC are fine, any kind marketed for drinking water
would work. Same with the glue. Use pvc cement designed for potable
(drinking) water systems.

Avoid metal whenever and wherever possible. Critical in sal****er,
just a good tip in fresh. Metal and water just aren't friends if you
have to *live* in the water. Copper or stainless would be better than
some other metals if you MUST use it.

Alas, my knowlege is lacking in this area. I'm familiar with acrilic
and the accompanying acrylic bonding glues, but little else.

pvc and pvc cement are fine to use. But stay away from any metal,
especially copper. Copper is toxic to quite a large variety of aquatic
life. For acrylic/plexi there is a special acrylic cement to use that you
should be able to get where you get the acrylic. It doesn't have to be
anything special for aquarium use.

By Gosh, you're right. I have a reef tank, for crying out loud, what
was I thinking? I have trouble sometimes switching my thought process
between SW and FW, and confuse myself sometimes.....

Thanks.

If you are thinking of using an acrylic product for a tank. Do not use a
plexi-glass product. Most will fail very quickly. You need to use
something like (lucite) Preferably cast or continuous cast material, not
extruded. For the bonding agent, weldon 4 if possible, weldon 3 will
work, but it's hard to work with, 4 is much easier for the inexperenced.
