View Full Version : De-Clorinating 850g of water

So the next question would be...
How do I De-Chlorinate 850g of water. Chemical treatment would cost big $$$
How long would it take to evaporate the chlorine from 850 gallons of city
water with three 2' X 2' hatches?
No Chloramines, just raw chlorine gas injected into the water stream. (I
used to maintain the Cities water well pumps, towers & control systems)

In that case I think water turbulence/oxygen will drive it off, but usually
if you let chloromined water stand for at least 3 days it all decays any way
and gives you the same effect.
I buy chemical de-chloronator here in Australia from, of all places, K-Mart.
It's a local Victorian brand called "Alive-O" and sells for A$1.99 for
150ml - 20ml does ~US50 gallons, so by my calcualtions it'd take 3 $2
bottles to do your tank (about US$4.00 all up).
I read somewhere on the web yesterday too that chemically tamed water isn't
quite as good as letting the chlorine drive off, so I would leave the whole
thing for 3 or 4 days with the lids off and oxygen bubbling (optional - just
increasing the surface area a bit), and then another day to be really sure.
Tell me; is this an all glass tank? It sounds massive ;)

Acrylic - weighs around 800+ pounds

It will sit for at least a week before I put any of my favorite fish in it
anyway, even with the transplanted bio media.

Acrylic - about 800+ pounds of plastic.
I guess the true cost of this tank is yet to be realized. $3,000US for the
tank is probably the smallest portion of the cost of the system.

Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Tap Water Conditioner
Concentrated. Instantly removes chlorine and detoxifies heavy metals from
tap water. Safe for all aquarium life. One teaspoon treats 10 gallons.
$25.99 per gallon at Petsmart, http://ihmp.net/@/rb.

Never the less - it sounds impressive - just the size of it ;)

Not if you buy pond-grade products.

Call and make sure they still only use chlorine gas, many cities are
switching to chloramines.

The water dept manager goes to our church. He says they have not changed a
thing and I still see the Chlorine Gas bottles outside the pump house.

Are you really interested in knowing how to dechlorinate this water?
Or the purpose of your post was completely different...
Who are you trying to fool here ? ;-)

I am actually asking. I had this thought in my mind that it would take
gallons of de-chlorinator. I just haven't really come to grips with a tank
of this size yet. It may all seem normal and mundane for some aquarists,
but the jump from 120g to 850g seems like such a huge jump. I really
haven't thought much about the proportions of the project. I have been busy
figuring out filters, stands, oxygenation, that when this thought came to my
head, I was whirling already.
Given a day or two to think, and the kind advice of this group, I am
bringing it into proportion now.
THANKS

It's nothing for those of us with ponds... :)

I know what you mean John. I have what is considered a small pond, which is
about the size of your tank(bigger and shallower). I am always amazed at
the tiny portions that must be added to my small tanks. There may be others
with similar potency but I recently bought a 500ml Prime and frankly have
problems measuring out the portions because it is so potent. For around $10
it will treat 5000 gallons. That should keep the cost quite low for even
your huge tank.
