View Full Version : Snails......Son of a....

I have a problem..... I had a 20Gal tank about a year ago and purchased
a couple snails. Well, they had little snails! And hundreds of them!
Now, I have a 55 Gal tank that WAS sans-snail. I actually boiled my
decorations before putting them in the new tank!
So...I go to petsmart a couple weeks later to get plants. We noticed in
the plant tank that they had snails. I asked a couple people there
about the chronic snail problem and they said that these dont
reproduce....
Well, long story short, there are about 1000 snails in my tank!!
Had-a-snail seems to mess with my levels too much to use. It killed
some fish last time. Im not sure if it was ammonia from the dieing
snails (dont remember) or what, but 2 days after had-a-snail....I
had-3-dead-fish.
Any thoughts on how to kill these things? Also, Im moving in 2
weeks...wanting to transport some water.....but no snails....
Thanks!

Get some loaches? Most Botias eat snails eagerly and are fine in
planted community tanks. I've used kuhli, yo-yo(or Pakistani) and clown
loaches as snail eaters myself. If you choose clowns for your larger
tank, get at least 3 because they generally don't thrive alone. Clowns
will eventually outgrow a 20 gallon tank but the other two I have
mentioned are fine. It will take the loaches some time to get the snail
population under control, but they have always managed to do it for me.

There is no killing snails without adding harmful chemicals to your tank.
Some of these chemicals don't mix well with certain fish. Boiling stuff
before adding it to the tank, and dipping your plants in chlorine will help
prevent future snail problems, but once you have them, all you can do is
limit their numbers. Try putting some food in a film canister. Poke some
1/4" holes in the canister to allow the snails to get in. Every morning
before it gets light, empty the canister. These snail traps can quickly
reduce the number of snails in the tank. You can try some loaches, but
you'll have to consider your current stocking and bioload as well as if you
want loaches that may dig around your plants. Good luck.

Along with getting snail eating fish, you can give your existing fish a
snack by simply crushing the shells. Don't use your bare hands. The
ones crawling on the glass tend to be really easy to get to.

Ok, not sure what type of snails you have, but since your about to do a
tank breakdown, I'll give you a link to a post, where another member
(Craig) states what methods he employed to end his snail problem...

Good luck, let us know how it works.
