Hello, again.
Trying to treat my fish's swimbladder problem in a 129 gallon tank
filled to 125 gallons and trying to raise the temp to 85.
Then, also using epsom salts - 1 tsp to each gallon water.
Heater is 100W
Temp seems to have stopped at 80. Will 5 degrees make that much of a
difference. Should I just add another heater or just larger one?
It came with the Tetra aquarium (129gal) I purchased in Nov '04.

Also.. have you ever heard of anyone putting something like cheesecloth
or using some other method to keep the fish from having any part of its
body exposed above the water line?

Thanks.

Depending on who you talk to you get anywhere from a 2W/gal ro 10W/gal
ratio.

You need more heater.

Thank you.
I went out and bought a 200w heater this afternoon.
Actually, I'm trying out your suggestion - April 2003 - about
raising the water to 85 and adding 1t per gal of epsom salts to the
water to help my Ryukin, who is swimming upside down. But the temp was
low yesterday when I added the epsom salt. So, I'm letting it stay in
for another 24 hours. Maybe a miracle will happen. Nothing else has
worked.

You are grossly under powered for heating that size of tank. 100 watts
heaters are usually good for 20 gallon tanks, 200 watt heaters are
sufficient for 50 gallons. When you talking about 125 gallons tanks even a
300 watt is not sufficient. 500 watts is what you need for an non-insulated
tank with moving water. If 200 watts is all you can get in your area, it
would be possible that two - 200 watt heaters may suffice in getting your
tank to 85 degrees and maintaining at that temp since if you are in the
southern Hemisphere it is summer there, Right!? When winter rolls around,
depending on your weather, you may have to augment with a third 200 watt
heater.

It would be far easier to buy a smaller aquarium to use as a hospital
tank. 10 gallon tanks can be purchased for under $10. The directions for
most aquatic medications I've seen are formulated per 10 gallon doses.
If a 10 gallon would be too small for your ryukin, a 20 gallon long
would work well.

Using a 125 gallon aquarium as a hospital tank sounds like a very
difficult task.

Okay, I mislead you. I have a 29 gallon tank - not a 129 tank.
I don't know why I added the 1. Sorry about that.
