Last week I got a batch of Molly fry to be used as both feeders and to raise
several up (they're Yucatans, and I like this type better than the Shenops).
I culled the week or the ones without the cirrect body shape, etc and dropped
one into each male Betta tank and the rest of the culls into the 75g for the
Angels and female Bettas.
All were gone in less than 1 second...except for one Betta.
He's claimed him as a pet I guess.
The flare buddy next to his tank sure wants that little fry and makes a good
show trying to snatch him up.
I thought maybe the fry was too large....so I put in a smaller one. Nope.
Now his pet has a buddy.
I will say, every once in a while he chases them....but it likes for the fun of
the chase...when he's well within reach of a strike..he turns away.
I swear, you can almost hear him saying..fish are friends not food....AH! That
movie has corrupted my fish now!
So for now....one of my boys has 2 pets. They'll need to be removed soon
enough, as he's only in a 1g tank.
As for the rest of the Molly fry that were kept....they're happily in a 21/2g
for now.

Maybe your Betta wants to be a daddy. :-)

My copper plakat, Mr Fuggly, shares a tank with neon tetras and three albino
corys. He likes to play Jaws with the tetras -- hides under a hollow log
then darts out, but stops when the neons scatter. The rest of the time he
hangs out on the bottom with the corys, browsing for leftovers. I think he
secretly wants to be a cory and have a gang of buddies.

Not 2 hours after I posted this, I was checking on the boys in my bedroom..oh
that didn't sound good did it...lol
Anyway, the male Bettas on my bedroom dresser and was watching them...male
Betta and his 2 little Molly fry pets at they were eating at the
surface....then the Betta swims PAST his original pet Molly fry and procedes to
gobble up the second one.
= )~
He still has his original pet.
I've never ever seen this behavior in Bettas.
I have heard of it happening plenty of times with Oscars, and Puffers...but
never a Betta.
Silly fish.
