What are the pros and cons of Distilled water? I have gone from tap to DI
water. I noticed some algea brake outs. Not sure of DI water could cause
this.

Deionised and distilled are not the same

DI is DeIonized water, not distilled. Either way though they shouldn't
cause algae outbreaks.

Hi Todd

Unless Distilled water is made in glass, you could be getting enormous
amounts of copper into your aquarium. Most store bought is made in
Copper and/or nickel Stills.

DI is DeIonized water. .05 to .06 MicroSiemens, much purer than RO
water could ever hope to be.

If you have switched to DI water, the algae is not coming from that
source.

I did mean distilled water not DI. Thanks.

Also,

Distilled water is deionized, but deionized water doesn't have to be
distilled.

Chew on that a little

why is distilled deionized? I didn't know vaporizing the water would affect
it in that way.

the ions are left behind as mineral scale when the water goes elsewhere and
is condensed on another surface.

You didn't know vaporizing (distilling) water would effect it in what way?

Distilling water leaves behind the ionic compounds, such as Ca++ CO3-- and
Na+ Cl-. Therefore the water becomes 'deionized'. However when most
people refer to DI water they are referring to water that was deionized by a
process other than distillation, such as filteration through ion exchange
resins.

Charles got my meaning, I didn't know that distilling the water also
deionized it. I thought it just left behind the solids.

the solids ARE the ions
