View Full Version : Bigger tank ---how long did it take?

Have moved from a 3g to 5g to 26g(my wife bought it) ;-}
I want the dolphins and other larger cichlids but realize that that
won't happen in my tank. ;-(
Just curious how long it will be before I get the itch to get the 75g.
Curious to hear how long it took for the members to get the bug and
move up from their smaller beginner type tanks (26-55g) to the 75g+
tanks. When will the big multi tank syndrome hit me ? ;-)
All the best,

If you have no space constraints, your spouse is interested, and have
enough disposable income for the purchase, then you'll probably buy that
bigger tank as soon as you feel confident about it (within 5-6 mos?).
Some other common triggers are, the fish spawned, a new fish at the pet
shop, someone has a big tank cheap, the kids are interested, winter is
coming and a new house (with more room).
In my case, I started with a 20g, but as I was only 12 or 13 years old, I
had no money to upgrade, so I started working at a pet shop (where I was
paid in aquarium supplies, fish and aquariums :o). It wasn't long before
I had 2 more 32g breeding tanks and a huge (then) 66g (which is still
running, ... umm .. several years later ;~).

I just skipped the whole small tank Phase & purchased a 115gal right off the
bat. Than went to smaller tanks to hold all the fry... LOL I guess I went
backwards.

I had a 10 and 20 - 15 years ago before such common use of the internet,
they got infested with snails and no one to tell me which fish would eat the
snails. Started over with a 55g 4 years ago, added a 120 at home, moved the
55 into my office and put a 120g in the show room. That lasted almost two
years. The 955 / 850 will go in the show room, the 120 there will go home
and possibly be SW or my Amazon Stream tank. Of course with two 120's at
home I will need a few 10's & 20's for quarantine and hospital tanks, the
55g in my office will become the quarantine tank at work. Hopefully in
about two years the 850 will be the quarantine tank, and I will put in a new
8,000g tank in the new building we are planning. This new building will
have a two acre pond.
Now what? Lake, Sea, Ocean? I will be thinking like NetMax and planning a
living room INSIDE a tank.
No obsession here!

I got my first 5 gal tank as a teenager. An older, retired man on my
paper route had 20 gallon tanks and they were so neat. My dad built
shelves and I got a 10 and finally a 15 gallon. Funny, I don't
remember what happened to them. We bought a new house and the fish
didn't go with us. Years later, I bought a 50 gallon tank. Then I
retired, sold the house and roved the U.S. for 9 months and then
bought a small house. I now have 5 tanks ranging from 10 to 75
gallons. My town only has a weekly which I pick up from my post
office box so I guess I will not expose any lads to this fate of tank
multiplication. <g>

If you're already asking, Id saw you've got the itch.

I went from 10g to 25g in 10 days, to give my first 3 platies more space.
After another 2 weeks, I added to more female platies, as one of my first 3
was a male not female as LFS said, and 2 days later one of new ones had fry.
Again, I didn't see her as gravid, and the LFS didn't tell me either. So, 14
fry grew up in a cycling tank, making it 19. So, I got a 65g within another
3 weeks, as 10 x 2" was too many for 25g. After 2 angels were added to keep
platy population stable, I split sunset and redwags as 14 sunset to 5
redwags was causing issues. My 25g by then had 5 white clouds/5 neons,
cories. I added 3 redwag females, and redwag males to 10g, and last week one
of the redwags has had at least 12 fry. These are second generation and so
different, some with pale colour and even little black fins, so active
already, that another tank is on the cards!!! I love looking at my 65g, but
hate all the maintanance, getting wet up to your shoulder, huge water
changes!!! So, my next one with be about 35/40g, a nice size for platies and
1 angel and easy to maintain. My 65g is sunset platies and 2 golden angels,
and new one will be redwag platies and a black angel. That will be 4 tanks
in 6 months now!!! One of my angels is nearly 10" tall, so beautiful, so I'm
pleased the 65g is 22" deep of water. Multi tank syndrome hits hard as you
want to give them all lots of space to thrive, not just survive. Mary

The itch? You've already got it, just haven't scratched it eh?
Me? My first tank was 5 gallons, in 1968. Much later I bought a 10
for my daughter. Then my son got a 20 in his room when he was an
infant. It's a great way to sooth them to sleep, the purring bubble
and other tank noises. Then about 15 years ago my brother-in-law gave
me a 55g and I still have it today. It's gone through several
iterations; big fish, small fish, breeders, meanies, crawdads, etc.
My next tank will be a 75gal. I like the size. It's got the same
footprint of a 90 or so, but not quite as deep. I like the idea of
being able to reach the bottom of the tank, _without_ putting on my
scuba gear. :)

In Jan 2002, a friend gave us a betta in a vase, with a plant.
Up to
that point, I had never considered having a fish. By Jan 2003, we
had
four 10 gal tanks, a 29 gal and a 75 gal. Nothing extravagant,
just
lots of inexpensive, but healthy and happy, community fishes.
I never saw it coming... 'till it was too late.
Best of luck

I have a 75, a 29 and 3 ten gallon tanks. Each 10 gallon was bought
to become a quarantine tank. I bought them all on eBay. The first
arrived with a large attractive ornament which was too attractive to
not keep. Not what I wanted to have in the Q tank. The next 10
gallon tank did not arrive, a problem with the vendor, so I got
another 10 gallon tank. When it arrived I had a surplus of plants
from a bulk mixed low light order. ( I get everything through the
internet as I have no LFS less than 200 miles away), so the tank was
planted. I figured this could be a dual use tank. Several months
later, the tank that had not been sent earlier, arrived. I now had a
dedicated Q tank quite by surprise. Fortunately my small home now has
all nooks and crannies pleasantly filled and the rooms nicely lit.

Hi Steve,
The 75g seems to be where I'll end up. I have a bow now and your
right about the scuba gear needed. Have to get into my bathing suit
to do any adjustments on the bottom. ;-}

Hi Larry,
Most beginners tend to go for smaller tanks perhaps due to budget restraints.
My advice is to always buy the biggest your budget can afford. Even if this
means saving up and putting on hold for a while. Larger tanks are easier to
manages, in that the eco-system doesn't fluctuate as rapidly as with smaller
tanks. I recommend that anyone should start with at least a 30g tank. It will be rewarding in the long run.

I feel your pain. My son won a Petsmart goldfish. We already had a
freshwater aquarium, so I put his fish (they're just feeder fish, nothing
fancy) in a new 10g in his room. I hated messing with it though, so we put
in a pond. :)
Actually we just moved, and he's back in a tank now. (Heron or raccoon ate
the other fish...)He's 5-6" long now. I believe that he certainly drew the
right straw in the life of a feeder fish.

Yes i know what you mean, your on the point of condenseing everything into a
"FishRoom" Then your gone. amount of tanks is controlled by size of room,
stacked three // four high.
Two things cure this condition, Devorce and House moving, in that order.
