View Full Version : discus worry

One of my discus has become a recluse over the last month or so, and I saw
him out last night when I got up at about two in the morning, and he's
becoming very thin. Any ideas?
160gals
Nitrogens all zero
pH 6.8 - 7
temp 27 - 28
hardness 12dh (I know it hard for discus but these aren't wild)
The only things I can think of that maybe different over the last couple of
months, is I got rid of two dwarf plecs as they were beginning to burrow
into the sand, and bought 4 ottos, so I'm having a bit of a algae growth at
the moment, but nothing serious. And what I thought were SAE's were false
and have got to about 4 inches and are beginning to get very territorial
with the others. But the other discus couldn't care less.
I've never had any diseases in my tanks, and so I'm not into and don't know
anything about preventative medication.
On the SAE question any idea how I can trap five of them in a 160 gallon
tank, to take them back to the LFS?
cheers for any advice

Best way to do it would be to drop the water level right down.

Had thought of that, but that would mean an 80 odd percent water change,
which would worry me would shock the discuss too much.

Try this:
Place an algae tablet (LFS) in the middle of your net..... Scoop the
SAE's up as they nibble on the tablet..... Problem is,you will probably
only get one at a time.

Good idea, I'll give it a try tonight.
I have been thinking of cutting up a clear tupperware pot, and making a
lobster pot type mechanism, with a wide mouth coming to a point just wide
enough for the fish to get in the load it with food and then hopefully
they'll won't get out quicker than I lift it out of the water.

this thing is indispensable in a large planted tank.

You can make a great fish trap with a 1 or 2l soda bottle depending on
the size of your fish. Cut the top third off, turn it around, and wedge
it into the bottom of the bottle. The small mouth makes it very hard
for fish to get back out.

Had ithe modified bottle in for 24 hours now and there all happily ignoring
it, even used tape on it now to blackened the sides, to make it look like a
hidy hole, but no joy, will find out when I get up tomorrow.
And the discus died :( bugger just wouldn't eat anything.
