View Full Version : Burning Aiptasia?

OK, out of the many methods for eliminating Aiptasia, (and after trying
boiling water injections with no avail,) I took the rock out, where the
critter hid, and basically took a mini torch and nuked it. Am I to
expect this thing to survive, say if I didn't get to the most holy of
holys where some viable tissue still is?

My experience is that Aiptasia has more lives than a cat. If even the
smallest piece survived your torch, expect to see it back again sooner or
later. I've tried all sorts of extermination schemes too and the only thing
that ever worked well for me was Joe's Juice (JoesJuice LLC).
If you haven't used Joe's Juice before - most Aiptasia are killed
immediately and no Aiptasia has survived a second application. Joe's Juice
comes with a syringe and looks like white latex paint. It doesn't seem to
bother anything else. It's supposed to be good for eliminating Majano
anemones as well.

LMAO!! That oughta do it! I have to remember that one.....I have had
good luck with squirting the aiptasia with a kalk solution. I usually
have to do it 2 or 3 times before it's gone for good. Tough little
b**tards.

Thanks all for the feedback.
I can't believe this thing will grow again. I mean, the torch not only
coagulated and burned the flesh, but it must of made the interior of the
rock (vicinity of the hole where the animal lived,) hot as hell. I mean
we are talking 1000+ F here. Hell if I would of continued the rock might
have melted : )

They do have 9 lives.
I brought a piece of dead coral back from the Caribbean a few years ago that
was lying out in the sun and remained dry until a couple days later when I
put it in my quarantine tank. Initially I had 1 aptasia that split into
hundreds all over the tank . A couple peppermint shrimp was the only way I
could get rid of them forever. I bought some Joe's Juice but never had to
use it.

Good point - I neglected to mention peppermint shrimp - only because it took
$60 in shrimp before I clued in to the fact that all I was doing was
providing expensive seafood dinners for my serpent starfish. Ever since
then I've had to rely on Joe's Juice and forget about peppermint shrimp...
so be forewarned if you have a serpent starfish.

I just learned a neat trick on RC yesterday about this
topic. If you want to kill them with kalkpaste, feed them
first with some meaty foods. What happens is they get that
chunk of food in their stomach, and when you try to drizzle
kalkpaste on them, they are unable to retract into the rock.
I've not tried it yet, but it sounds very reasonable to me.

Hello reefers.
I was taking a squizz through the latest TFH magazine and they had a big
write up on MACNA. Apparently alot of aquarists are now employing the use of
a certain type of Nudibranch that feeds exclusively on Aiptasia, and does a
hell of a good job too. I can't remember the scientific name of the little
fella but if anyone here is interested I can look it up again.

Richard I just used boiling water injection to kill another aiptasia
last nite. It has never failed for me. I can only imagine that
perhaps there is a technique problem. Use a 10 or 20 cc syringe. Make
sure the water is truly boiling immediately before use. Make sure to
inject the water directly into the hole where the aiptasia lives.
Inject the syringe volume over 2 to 4 seconds. Repeat the injection
twice. For me the technique has never failed, it is easy, can be done
without moving your live rock, and costs not a penny.

Hi and thanks,
My problem was that the aiptasia was extending from underneath the rock;
so there was no way to localize the hole without turning the rock upside
down. So I took it out and figured, if I'm going to be injecting hot
water, let me give it the flame of a mini torch.
I was not using that much, so probably why I failed. I was using a 5 CC
with an 18G needle. However, I'm going to stock up on some 20 CC and a
finer needles in the event the creature survived or more are in the process.
Thanks,
Rich
