View Full Version : Leaking Tank

My 55 gal tank was used and the top trim has always been slightly loose. If
water level or bubbling water gets that high it will very slowly leak out
untill the level is reduce. I am finally considering possibly trying to seal
the junction of the glass and inside trim IF I can simply lowel the water
level a few inches and apply sealant, waiting 24 hours+ before I raise the
level again. I already have some Loctite Clear Household Silicone -
Adhesive/Sealant - Indoor/Outdoor - about $3 a tube. Will my procedure and
sealant work or is there something special about aquarium sealant at twice
the price?
Thanxx

notables:
Silicone takes 3 days to completely cure, but will finish outgassing
before that.
Silicone falls into several categories, adhesives, sealers and both are
available with fungicides which are toxic to fish. Since your
application has no structural value, all you need is the sealer
capability (and the adhesive is also a sealer), but since it may contact
water, I would check to be sure that it is free of fungicides.
Keep some air movement across a window screen placed over the tank to
keep the jumpers in.
I'm surprised that the water is wicking up and over the glass under the
trim, but I guess it's feasible. Lots of top trim pieces are not
siliconed down properly as the trim doesn't have any structural value.
Good luck with it.

I'd be safe and get the silicone meant for aquariums. You don't know
what's in the stuff you've got.
BTW, I've seen some silicones that explicitly state "not for aquariums".

Does it say "safe for aquarium use"? or maybe "not for aquarium use"? Is it
100% pure silicone?

GE has changed their tune a bit lately. Here is a reprint of what GE
recently sent me.
**
We do not recommend any Products for Underwater Submersion but Customers
use Products RTV108 & IS808 or GE012A Window & Door Silicone I for the
repair of Aquariums. These Products would give the strongest Bond, but
during the Cures Process, about 1 Week, these Products do Offgas Acetic
Acid. Once the Cure is complete, the Offgassing ceases and these Products
are completely Non-Toxic. If you wish to use RTV108 or IS808 or GE012A
Window & Door Silicone I, we recommend waiting at least 1 week to add
Water or Fish. We appreciate your interest in GE Silicones. Should you
have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us or visit
our website at www.gesilicones.com.
**
The GE012A Window & Door Silicone I must be the GE 1 Craig is referring
to. Based on earler correspondance I had with GE, reprint of my post
follows:
**
GE also has an aquarium product line (check their site) which is good for
up to 5g, so at least you know it's not toxic, but it's not available
everywhere. The industrial versions GE said were safe to use were: GE012
(clear), GE12A (clear), GE112 (white), GE312 (black) and GE361 (clear),
but this is not advertised at this time (use at your risk).
**
Interestingly, I found a 100% silicone which was not suitable from Mulco,
reprint follows:.
**
Mulco (Seco) said to avoid their 100% silicone general sealants as they
were not adhesive enough, and to only use their clear silicone which
would be free of herbicides. Any silicone which says it resists mould &
mildew will have herbicides and be toxic to fish.
