View Full Version : Skimmer adjustment questions.

I am setting up my first SW tank after ten years of FW. I am switching a 55
gal. over, and right now it's just sand and water, haven't even started
cycling yet. I've been working with the skimmer, a Prizm Deluxe, to see if
I can adjust the flow properly, and getting very wet foam which quickly
fills the collection cup. Is it neccessary to have some organics present to
get the dry foam?
Thanks,
Mark

In a word, yes. I myself can't say enough hateful things about that
skimmer, but I will share my knowledge about it. Set the water intake
so that the wet foam comes up to where the black 'O' ring in the neck
is. Now don't touch the thing for about 3 days. Seriously, don't
touch it. Once you have some organics in it, you will need to tweak
it, you will also need to tweak it daily anyway, and tweak the hell
out of it after everytime you empty the cup....sorry, I digress. The
unit works, but I found it to be very troublesome, and quite
underpowered for large tanks. As long as you stay with fish-only or
FOWLR, you should be fine once you get used to its needs.

Skimming is great, great skimming is even better, but don't forget Flow...
Flow is great also... and Phosphate control.... and, and, and... sorry,
couldn't help it.

I'm running mine with air intake wide open and water intake at about 1/2
open. It's working very well.

I have a Quad from A miracle if you don't jam a sponge in the out feed it
will not work I emailed and talked to the techs and they have no answers. I
guess the level is just to low, I have a Rio 2100 pumping all day and now
after a year of messing with this thing it works. I guess all skimmers are a
pain in the ass?

No, only poorly designed skimmers. A good skimmer is a breeze to operate.

That's what I thought until I owned a good skimmer. I then realized
how little the Prizm was actually doing.
