The last time I added them up there were nearly a thousand African
cichlids. Almost every lake and river on the whole African continent
has some cichlids. Some lakes have hundreds of species. You need to
start searching the web for pictures.
Try http://malawicichlids.com/index.htm and that's just Lake Malawi.

There are African cichlids for every type of water from very hard
to very soft, dried out seasonal ponds to roaring rapids, half inch
long to 3 feet.
I suggest you get a book and narrow down the question a bit

The other option to buying a book and searching the different web sites to
see what's what, is to post your question on our forum at
www.fishaholics.org or swing by our chat. I'll be more than happy to give
you a general break down of the different classes of African cichlids. As,
steve mentioned, there are over a thousand different species of "African"
cichlids, so most sites specialize on specific areas. Just in Lake Malawi
alone there are over six hundred species. Many of these you find in the
shops labeled as "Mixed Africans" and many sites specialize in just these
fish. That's just the tip of the iceberg.
Swing by our chat at Fishaholics sometime and I'd be more than happy to
spend a few hours discussing various types and their pros and cons. :D
Tim
The site NetMax mentioned is good for some of the Rift Lake species.
www.duboisi.com is a good site for Tanganyikan cichlids.
www.cichlid-forum.com is a huge site for all cichlids but can be
overwhelming. ;-)
And Steve already mentioned a good site for just the Lake Malawi species.
