Well, start with the FAQs ;-)
http://faq.thekrib.com
http://www.actwin.com/fish/mirror/

There's info there on filtration, stocking, live plants, and I think
some compatibility. A full list of compatibles for a community tank
would take hours of typing. Things that come to mind quickly are
angels, gouramis, loaches, corydoras cats, small plecos.

Decor is completely up to you. I favour a very natural looking tank
with brown gravel, a black background, bogwood, rocks, and many, many
live plants. Other people like brightly colored gravel with an ocean
scene background, glow-in-the-dark plastic plants, and fake treasure
chests. Most folks are probably somewhere in between.

Hi there - This page is pretty nifty. I think it will be a good start on
what you are looking for:
http://www.timstropicals.com/Compatibility/CompatibilitySearch.asp. The
list is not extensive but you just select your fish and it gives you
compatibles and stocking level for each fish.

Net Max also has an excellent site. http://www.netmax.tk
For me at least it gave me a better feel of how many overall fish I might
strive for, under the "Stocking levels" section. I havent research this
suggestion so take it as illustrative and not a specific suggestion - Tims
site might tell you all 5 of the varieties you mentioned are compatible and
that each should be in a group of at least 5. So 5 groups x 5 each x avg
length of 2" = 50 gals @ 1"/gal - your set. However NetMax will tell you if
most of those fish occupy the same level it will be more unlikely you tank
will be harmonious. Tim will maybe tell you cories and hatchet fish are
compatible. Adding those instead of so many mid dwellers and you'll have a
better tank.

My suspicion is between the two sites you'll have a start on what you might
be thinking about - then ask the group and you'll get yeas and nays more
likely.

I would definitely recommend some cories, but some tetra's dont go well
with some larger fish like angels as Elaine T suggested. They are fine
when they are young but wen they start to get bigger then a couple of
inches they tend to prey on small fish if not fed properly. Barb's too
get very fin nippy to some longer tailed species, sometimes the danio's
nip too. With fin nippy species it is best to keep them in a fairly
large shoal so they are too busy with each other to notice other
fish.Dont be discouraged with barbs they are a great energetic little
fish just keep em busy with a few friends and they will be fine. Some
smaller Gourami's like the Dwarf Gourami would look great. Some darker
natural looking substrate that would lok really well with some neons,
cardinals and neon dwarf gourami's. Get a large nice looking peice of
bogwood at a centrepeice, some nice rocks. For plants I would suggest
some red leaved varities in the centre and lush green ones on the side.
Just really whatever u like, it is your aquarium remember.
