The woman at my local pet store said that I needed plant food for my
Elodea densa, is this true, and what kind should I purchase? All of my
plants are either floating to give pregnant fish and babies places to
hide, or anchored with very small glass bottles, for I have bare glass
bottoms, with only some larger rocks, but no gravel, et cetera.
Thanks.~Dean.

I would say no, you don't have to feed them. Nitrates is the food of
choice. If you don't have any to that, 1) I envy you and 2) your plants are
probably sucking them all up. Mine grows long, but not that thick I think
this is because I have only standard hood lighting. That being said, it
still grows better than anything else.

Most aquatic plants appreciate a bit of potash and iron beyond what they
get from the fish. For a really simple one-bottle fertilizer that
doesn't promote algae, I like Tetra FloraPride.

How much light do you have? I find that the addition a flourish and a wee
tad phospates made my hornwort and everyhting else in the guppy/platy really
bloom.

I have two large windows with an eastern exposure, that gets lots of sun
[I live on Miami Beach, Florida], both direct sunlight, and in the
afternoon, reflective, when the sunlight reflects off of the white wall
of the apartment building across the way,...Those two windows are but a
few feet to the right of my 30 gallon tank, with my 20 and 10 gallon,
just to the left of it, which also gets sunlight from another window
nearby, as does my 12 one gallon containers placed on shelves, each
holding a single Betta splendens and a few strands of Elodea. Then on
the other side of my 30 gallon tank, I have a 25 inch long, by 15=BD
inch wide, by 5=BD inch deep plastic storage container with lots of
Elodea and three very pregnant Fancy Guppys. Next to that I have a 13=BD
gallon plastic storage container with even more Elodea, and more than 15
baby Fancy Guppies that are really growing fast. Both of those two
container are directly in front of the two main windows. And as far as
artificial lighting, all I use is one small 'office-type' clamp-on lamp
for when I take my photographs. And of course there are the lamps I
have for lighting my small studio apartment,...Other than that, nothing.
Does that information help? Pax
Vobiscum,...~Dean.

your Elodea would grow in a toilet, ;)

its very hardy and requires little light, food isnt reccommended as it
can easily grow out of hand

Elodea in warm water grows alot thiner then in its natural cold water
by the way.

(that is my extensive knowledge of plants completly used up, lol)
