Does anyone know of an additive that kills hair algae in marine tanks and is
safe for the fish?

hi....hair algae is ok in the tank.

have you thought about trying a turbo snail or herbivore fish like a
butterfly?

im learning marines myself and have heard that algea can be a big
problem, normally caused by a rise in nitrates or too high levels
of lighting.

good luck...:)

Yeah, it's call RO/DI water. :-) After about 6 months your hair algae will
be gone. Trying to "kill it" with chemicals is a bad idea.

It's not just RO/DI ... or is it?

I confess that I got lazy, and my tank went downhill. Luckily, no livestock
that I had in my tank died (including some soft corals), but I got a very
bad hair algae problem.

I'm back to run my protein skimmer, regular water changes, etc.... but,
there's still hair algae. Are you saying that continuing this for 6 months
will make everything go away? Is it just the chemical inbalance that causes
hair algae growth i.e., in a healthy system hair algae cannot survive?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Hair algae requires two things; light and phosphates. If you also add nitrates,
it goes wild. One would think that frequent water changes would bring the
phophate level down, but tap water in many areas of the country now contains a
pretty high level of phosphates. That's the basis for the recommendation to use
RO/DI water.

Hi......do some research on a clean up crew for your tank.if your fish
stock is ok and algea is your only problem, then with little cost you can
get algea eating snails which will relish on it all day long...

have a look at this site www.liveaquaria.com

look under tank cleaners/inverts and you will see all the different
types of clean up crews you can get...

good luck...jay:)
