Drats - just posted with my nitrate dilemma and went to put a little pinch
of food in one 15 gal. (Nitrates okay there even with no live plants - I
think:) It has 2 platys, 1 2" molly, and 3 longfin blue danios. It is the
closest thing I have to a quarantine tank so I was going to push the load
temporarily and added 3 buenos aires tetras (several weeks ago). Almost
immediately the bully of the three danios (but definitely smaller than the
tetra) was chasing one or two of the tetras around the tank. Chasing, not
just the occasional close in their direction, it moves and repeat in a
minute. Perhaps the tetras were more timid having just being put it.
Nonetheless I removed the tetras almost immediately and put them in their
future home to reduce their stress - so far so good. I was then concerned
then that the danios might nip at the live bearers - (the molly in
particular has a nice lyretail), although they have been together for 3 or 4
weeks - no prob.
Soooo- as I look in the tank I see the bully now has the majority of the
lower portion of his tail missing and a pretty significant gouge/bite just
behind its head, definitely too large to have been caused by another of the
danios. I read these fish should be compatible. Is this generally not the
case or perhaps just an instance of one of the larger livebearers saying
well, if your gonna mess with me I'll mess with you? If it was the molly,
it did have a mate who passed about 10 days ago, but I was told it wouldn't
become listless with the other platys there. 1)What do I do with the
'victim'. I could temporarily put it in another 15 g that I am building
stock. It currently has 4 little neons and 3 lemon tetras. I could also
move it in with the 6 buenos aires and 1 Blood Parrot, 3 cories, 2 otto.
The blood parrot is not at all aggressive, but the 6 tetras might be a bit
bolder now with 1 injured fish. 2)Should I add Stress Coat for the injury?
3)In the long run I guess I have 3 Danios of concern?
Thanxx
