Just curious... they look pretty different so I'm wondering if maybe
"catfish" is a loose term used to describe those aquarium fish or if
they're actually related to the catfish that are raised for human
consumption?

There are many different types of fish in the aquarium trade given the term
catfish. Its pretty much given to any large bottom feeder. There are a few
species like the Channel Catfish that is a north American species that are
related IMO.
