I bought a calcium test kit that you add a drops of the test liquid and then
count them until the water turns from pink to violet. According to my
calculations my levels are between 520 and 540! Is this too high? I read
that they should be between 400 and 450. What will happen if I leave it at
this level?

TIA

ps.. This is a great group. Always friendly and willing to help. I can't
wait till I learn enough to be able to contribute myself

Are you using Oceanic salt?

I bought several boxes of Catalina Water Company Real Ocean Pure Natural
Seawater. I've used this for the first 3 months of water changes (my
original water was made with Instant Ocean salt). I found a great place to
buy RO water ($0.25 per gallon), so I had just purchased more Instant Ocean
salt and plan on using that from now on.

Really depends. The first thing I would suggest you do is that you have
somebody else test your calcium and see if they get the same results as
you do. If you calcium is really that high, it is not really a problem
other than you could have other ions out of balance. You could also
have a problem with calcium precipation on pumps/powerheads etc.

You need to check your alkalinity and see what it is at. Normally if
you have calcium levels this high and a normal alkalinity you will have
a major precipation event.

Oceanic salt give us high readings, especially if the
salinity is 1.026

Check your alkalinity.... with Ca that high there has to be some other ion
out of wack... and in a salt tank it is the alkalinity that most often
balances this out.
