Hi......is it true that when you carry out a water change and use tap
water instead of R.O or deioinized water, the ph always settles at around
8.0-8.4......and is this ph ideal for most marine fish??

Also....do you have to mix the new water going in-into a bucket and keep
it warmed and oxygenated overnite(24hrs) before putting in the
tank....is this really neccessary??

any help.....much appriciated.

It all depends on the PH of the water coming out of your tap. If your tap
water is 6.2 coming out and you keep adding this to a 8.6 PH system,
eventually theres going to be a balance point where the dissolving
substrates and other additives balance it out. I usually add a PH
balancing product like "Proper PH 8.2" to the freshwater before I do
anything to it. But then again my tap water is 6.2... :-)

As John said, that depends on your tap water.

One day is entirely too short. I mix mine up three days before I run the change.

Hi Jay

I just wanted to add something to the great advice you've been
getting. A great majority of what you will hear pertaining to keeping
a marine tank is anecdotal. Meaning, people who had a certain thing
work for them, and saw it work for others, will recomend it to you.
This is natural, I do it myself. This however, does not mean that it
is guaranteed to work in EVERY tank. What works for one, may spell
disaster for another. For example, some people will tell you canister
filters are certain doom for a reef tank. Others will tell you they
use them, and have no problems. Both are likely right. Get it?
So, much of it is up to you. Study, hang out at places like garf
and reefcentral. Ask around at the LFS etc. When you think you've
learned enough about something, try it yourself, carefully.

enjoy.
