I have a batch of about 20 fry that were spawned 9 months ago from 2 common
goldies, there are a lot with black patches and patterns but they are still
the olive green/bronzey colours of wild fish, when does the orange colour
set in?

John,
Any time from now until they are two years old. And then depending on the
conditions may change color through out their life, but Comets have a
tendency to change and stay one color. I had a Olive Ranchu that was two
years old when it started changing color. I had Comets this year that were
olive and Bronze when I moved them to other quarters outside this winter.
Some have changed color in the outside ponds in the cold water others are
still olive and bronze. I am trying breed a Black Comet. Some are still
Black. Will see what the Spring brings when I cull them at that time.

John,
Sometimes putting the fish outside causes them to change color, probably the
UV triggers the change. I have put olive fish outside at times and within a
week they are a different color.

I only have a small pond that already has 5 5" fish in it and htey are
already running out of growing room, hopefully i`ll have a new pond by the
end of thsi year. if the colour change is sunlight related, would i get away
with putting the tank near a window?

Sure John,
That will work. But just remember it is possible that here again it just
may be genetic and has to do with triggers that will start the changing.
There has been a little research on this event, but with the genetic code
that Goldfish carry and the conditions inwhich the color changes take place
nothing conclusive has been found.
